Concours in the Hills Seeking Race-Winning Cars for 2021

by Cyndi PaceleyFountain Hills, AZ — It was one of the few concours to actually take place in 2020, and event organizer Scuderia Southwest is planning for the Feb. 13, 2021 Concours in the Hills to top the previous seven annual events.
Photo: Nick Lish (Vintage Motorsport)“Now that the event is pretty well full with 1,000-plus vehicles, we are turning our attention to specific categories,” Show Manager Peter Volny said. “The first area is an increase in the Race Car section and we are encouraging Vintage Motorsport readers to enter their significant race cars in the event. There’s no entry fee, but car owners can make a donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, our charity partner.”

Registrations for 2021 open in September; get the online entry form at GiveToPCH.org/concours. Awards are presented for Best Race Car, Best Import, Best Domestic, Best Car Club Display and Best of Show.

The concours has grown from its first-year display of 220 cars and $25,000 raised to more than 1,000 cars and $262,000 for PCH this year — so organizers can rightfully claim that the event is Arizona’s premier show for high-performance and collector cars.

This year’s event set a lofty standard for race cars entries by showing the 1966 Sebring-winning GT40 driven by Ken Miles; Jacques Villeneuve’s championship-winning March Formula Atlantic; the Paul Newman/Scott Sharp Oldsmobile Trans Am; the Lola T70 Can- Am Simoniz Special; the 1982 Eagle Indy car driven by Kevin Cogan; and a 1958 Echidna 58, one of only three built and the 1959 SCCA champion.

The show was even opened by Arie Luyendyk, Derek Daly, Didier Theys, Paul Tracy, Lyn St. James and Harley Cluxton with a “start your engines” announcement.

Concours in the Hills draws entries from as far as California, Nevada and Colorado to its site in Fountain Park in Fountain Hills, Ariz. — a picturesque setting with gently rolling hills surrounding a lake with America’s tallest fountain and a backdrop of rugged mountain peaks.
