Default Tech 101: Small-Block Chevrolet Guided Rocker Arm Information

Tech 101: Small-Block Chevrolet Guided Rocker Arm Information

By Jeff Smith

September 28, 2025
In the 1980s General Motors shifted away from small holes in the cylinder head and pushrod guide plates instead to what they refer to as “guided” rocker arms. These stamped rocker arms use two small ridges on the rocker tip to straddle a taller, extended valve tip. This centers the rocker arm over the valve. These guided rockers are also used with the popular iron Vortec cylinder heads.

This worked very well as long as the guided rockers are used with the extended tip valves. But if these rockers are mismatched with older, shorter valve tip lengths, the ridges can either slide off the valve tip or, more dangerously, contact the retainer which could unload the valve locks and perhaps cause a dropped valve.

We’ve also seen misapplications where guided roller rockers were used in conjunction with guide plates on small-block Chevys. This inevitably places the rocker arm in a bind, often resulting in damage to pushrods, rockers, and valve tips. Most Vortec heads come with the extended valve tips to accommodate guided rockers. While it is not necessary to use guided rockers on Vortec heads, if they are not used then pushrod guide plates must be employed to align the rocker arms with the valve tips.

Finally, be aware that the Vortec valves with taller valve tips (with a longer overall length) will require a longer pushrod to establish the proper rocker arm movement across the valve tip. This may seem overly complex but this is what backyard engine builders must be aware of when mixing parts from different era small-block Chevrolet engines.

In the lead image you’ll see an aftermarket guided rocker. Note the thin steel guides that straddle the extended valve tip. Guided rockers require a taller valve tip above the retainer and also should not be used in conjunction with pushrod guide plates.

Default Where were you in the 50's....

Jim Richardson

November 7, 2025
Last Sunday, I was at the local coffee shop with a couple of my old silverback buddies. It was our monthly get-together, during which we go to the Veterans Stadium Car Show and Performance Swap Meet in Long Beach, California; gaze longingly at the classics we have yet to own; pick up parts and tools we don’t really need; and then adjourn to Dale’s Diner.

I washed dishes there in my adolescence long ago, and for me it’s like going back in time. It still has a jukebox with music from the ’50s, and it still serves unrepentant great cuisine from the era, such as cheeseburgers, chili, french fries and Cokes. While swapping stories of my days of guts and glory with pals Wayne and Gary last weekend, I had a couple of epiphanies. The first was that I had gone full circle and was right back where I started, and the second was that I still enjoy my friends in the car hobby, maybe more than ever.

I like this bunch because old car buffs are mostly successful, intelligent, capable, logical, and usually family men. We love old cars, old music, and old spouses. And we realize all too clearly that, though civilization has made immense progress in the last 50 years, we have also lost a bit in the process. Take automotive styling for example. Coupes, roadsters and sedans are almost extinct. Everybody drives sport utility vehicles these days. Even Lamborghini makes an SUV! The paragon of swoopy sensational supercars is now building boxy people-haulers that have the aerodynamics of a brick.

And then there are those new pickup trucks the size of office buildings, driven by pharmacists and data managers. They are immaculate and their beds are pristine. Pickups were created as work vehicles, not statements of manhood. There was a song years ago that went: “As the farmer hauls another load away ….” You get the picture.

We are marooned today, whether we want to be or not. But that doesn’t stop me from polishing up my ’55 Bel Air Beauville wagon and going to the swap meet with guys who share my proclivities, like ogling old cars. There are so many we have yet to own. I’m talking about that Pepto-Bismol pink 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, sitting next to that sinister black 1965 GTO convertible, and that stunning gold 1953 Studebaker Starliner coupe over there next to my pal Gary’s matching-numbers, red-and-white 1956 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery.

In high school, the jocks walked around sporting letterman jackets, but we proudly donned our car club coats. And while the athletes went to football practice, we polished and tuned our rides so we could pick up our girlfriends that evening and go to Dale’s, followed by a movie at the theater across the street. Sadly, that theater is gone now, after becoming an adult theater, and then a church.
Back in my Clearasil days, my father referred to my pals as “your hoodlum buddies,” but none of us ever got into real trouble, though we were spoken to sharply by the men in blue on occasion. We all ended up being successful in our careers and life in general. Plus, we still have our old cars, and enjoy working on them.

While the football players were throwing 50-yard passes, we were dialing-in Isky cams in Chevy small-blocks. A couple of fellows who went to my school went on to college football, and others got into hallucinogens. But of the guys in my car club, Jerry went on to have his own full-service garage in Santa Cruz, California, and Rick opened a brake and front-end shop. Tony owned a Honda dealership, and Frank taught auto shop as well as English and Latin at a local high school.

We were lucky. We got to live through the golden age of Southern California car culture, cruise to drive-in restaurants, go to Lions Drag Strip, and even go to drive-in movies with our main squeeze on Saturday night. This sometimes led to angora knitted dice hanging from our rearview mirrors, made by our girlfriends to signify that we were taken. After that, often came wedded bliss, and we ultimately replaced the dice with baby shoes.

But now that the kids are grown, most of us have long since stopped dialing-in Isky cams. We are now more into restoration and less into moving violations. However, we haven’t lost our appetite for lumberjack breakfasts or chili burgers and swapping stories and restoration tips. And we also still help one another when we need to swap engines or replace clutches.

Dale’s is still in Long Beach, California, and remains just up from Veterans Stadium, and when the monthly swap meet is on, the place will be full of old car guys swapping stories. They welcome youngsters too. Just keep in mind that they won’t have sushi or kale on the menu.
