The highly informal strictly voluntary humble newsletter of the Keystone Motor Club
Back on January 18 2020 at The Keystone Motor Club meeting was held at
17649 Gunn Highway and Van Dyke Road, East side of Winn Dixie parking lot.
--------------------------
While trophies last! NO ENTRY FEE CAR SHOW!
--------------------------
We meet and greet monthly EVERY 3rd Saturday at Winn Dixie, 17649 Gunn Hwy in Odessa/Tampa; SE corner of Gunn Hwy and Van Dyke Rd. Early roll in is 930AM for a 10AM start...and gone to the next car show or lunch by 12 noon.... There is a "notch" in the parking lot at that point. Please text Text TEXT 813-452-7807 for the location.
or email Bobfixesitup@yahoo.com .

Thanks to Milt Roorda for keeping the Keystone Banner and bringing it over for the meeting.
He discovered that if he rolled it instead of folding, that there were fewer wrinkles. Good idea!
Milt also replaced the older ropes with newer and better rope, and transported the banner in the first car he ever owned, if I heard that right. He also bought us doughnuts from our sponsor, Winn Dixie and had a few display items on his antique table, including a possible vintage gas powered headlight.
---------------------------
While attaching the ropes to a tree, we thought about asking permission to attach a small environmentally friendly sign to the small diameter (don't know the diameter) tapered metal light pole between the two trees, and just a few feet from the Winn Dixie East side parking lot "notch".
---------------------------
During the meeting it was suggested that 1.we make a smaller more temporary sign to go under the meeting announcement sign announcing the meeting location if we change it.
AND 2. find a volunteer to change it ( if and as) needed. It was suggested that 3. we put a phone number on the main sign for people to call if they arrive and we are not there
OR if they are car folks and see the sign during the month, they can call......4. that will save someone having to change the sign. Bob Vail volunteered to allow his phone number to be used, as an expedient to save someone having to change out the sign.
Milt Roorda will be looking into having a real sign maker do the job once we decide what should go on the sign and looking into how much it will cost us.
Maybe something simple but CENTERED:
---------------------------------------------
KEYSTONE MOTOR CLUB
meets every 3rd Saturday
10AM -NOON 813-839-4281
or 813-452-7807
---------------------------------------------
I had thought the dimensions (still open to suggestions) should be maybe the same size as the real estate plug-in-the-ground signs. Placed high enough to avoid vandalizing.
Plain block letters for easier reading, maybe white like our banner......contrasting black letters......(yellow doesn't show on white)
Milt will be the pilot-in-command, so to speak, so I won't disagree with whatever Milt comes up with sign-wise.
So far we have $10 towards the sign donated by Earl Baker.
---------------------------------------------
Further (sign or otherwise) suggestions are welcome and will be passed on. If you have thoughts, make them known.
Email me, text me, call me or post in the newsletter. We are willing to listen.
--------------------------
WE STILL NEED SIGN PERMISSION FIRST.......and Jan Nelson is looking into that. So far the East side of the Winn Dixie lot requires ONLY permission from Winn Dixie. On the parking lot West side it requires permission from other tenants at that location.
Jan Nelson has volunteered to hold the next meeting February 15 (3rd Saturday), at her and Dale's house and only members on the email list or friends of Keystone Motor Club will be notified of the location.
Jan has suggested boat tours and "water boarding" (that's not the right name lol
) as activities.
Jan and Dale Nelson will supply Juice, Coffee, and water.
Members are encouraged to bring whatever covered dish they feel like should be added and/or shared.
----------------------------------------------
Earl Baker contributed $10 toward the sign project at the meeting end.
We have no formal means of collecting the rest....and we won't know the total cost until we finalize specifically the details of what we want.
Bob Vail will be the cash holder of that $10 until we have voted up a treasurer.
(We know where he lives lol
)
Edit Note: the $10 was paid to Milt Roorda at the May 16 2020 meeting.

Some of the Keystone Motor Club founders,
Sam and Carol Prentice attended and passed me the raffle tickets, until someone else is willing to keep them.
Vic Piano is still the keeper of the table and tent for when we need them.
Milt Roorda is the current keeper of the banner.
Bob Vail is the cash holder of our $10.
Edit Note: the $10 was paid to Milt Roorda at the May 16 2020 meeting.

I see a trend of a meeting format with:
1.starting with socializing and BS'ing, then
2.discussing anything/business previously brought up, car events attended, then
3.discussing any fresh ideas/new business currently being brought up, future car events, then
4.Personal Items for sale, trade or Want-to-buy.
5.other commercial companies which members recommend, and as always........buying from Winn Dixie if possible.
If we need to add/delete/rearrange categories, let me know.........

Bob,
We have no dues so we made our picnic money by selling 50/50 tickets.
Half of the proceeds went to the winner and the other half was offered to the host
of whoever's place we visited.
Most hosts refused the money and we used it for our picnics.
Here is the roll of tickets. If you want to continue 50/50 it's up to you.
I suggest you ask them. It's their club, you are just running it.
Good Luck,
Sam Prentice
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks, Sam.
We both agree that it's the members club.
lol..........I'm kinda not exactly running it.
It's a highly informal and strictly voluntary Motor Club which is run by the members.
We all do the best that we can and good people jump in and voluntarily do whatever they see
that needs to be done, and things which they want to do.
----------------------------------------------------------
A few examples: Members have held meetings at their house during cold weather and during very hot weather.
Members have set up a tour of a place they liked, which they wanted to share with the club. Members bought the Keystone Motor Club banner, Table and tent, have replaced the banner ropes, have bought coffee, doughnuts, food and/or supplies for club cookouts and in one instance stood in the rain to do the cooking for the rest of us.
Some members have a car ramp and prior to July 2019 when I came on board, it's my understanding that in the past members would meet and work on other members cars.
Some members have as yet unshared recollections of things which I haven't yet been told about, and when they tell me about some of those things, those recollections will become part of this newsletter and part of the Keystone Motor Club history.
---------------------------------------------
This newsletter documents from post#1, the things that members voluntarily did as they saw a need.
There have been 7,000 views of our humble newsletter since June of 2019, so someone is interested in
this club and what we do.
It's the members who make the suggestions, the decisions, and do the fun stuff, and that's how it should be.
I will hold the raffle tickets until we need them again.
I thank you Sam, for your trust in me.

At the risk of NOT turning the newsletter into a flea market flyer......
Some people ARE looking for specific parts to complete a project.
----------------------------------
It was suggested at the January 18 2020 meeting (post 161) that we end meetings with some "want to buy" mentions. This is the first of those mentions. We will add more to this list over time.
------------------------------
Bob and Doris Carter are looking for the following truck parts for a 1953 Chevrolet 3/4 ton truck.
Hood
Tailgate
Grille
Radiator
Gauges
Wiring
Floor panels
Thank you, Bob and Doris Carter

It was determined at the January 18 2020 meeting end that members would mention companies who did a good job for them if they wanted to.
Recommendations of companies where you had a good experience will get a one time mention
in the Keystone newsletter , and then a FREE shop forum on our sponsors website, (Tampa Racing.com)
where the recommended company can post anything they (or the recommending member) want to.
We already have two of those business/shop forums. See post #14... and post #16...
From the January 18 2020 meeting:
For those interested in Steel Horse or Auto Trophies, you can contact the owner and maker at STEELHORSEMETALWORX1@GMAIL.COM
Thank you,
Bob Carter
-------------------------
Thanks Bob. Due to your recommendation I'm moving Steel Horse to a FREE business/shop forum.
it can be found here: (once I get it finished)
------------------------
And I will do the same for any other member with a business recommendation.

A long ago Daytona 24
An article for the Keystone Motor Club newsletter
In 1968 I went to the Daytona 24 in my Bertone Simca Coupe.
It had a great heater and we slept in it behind the timing/scoring trailer with the rest of the workers.
-----------------------------------
There was a tiny building just outside the infield tunnel where we signed in as
Timers/scorers and we had an SCCA logbook to list our races. It was in the days before SCCA insisted on selling memberships to volunteer workers. Everyone I knew did it for fun for free, as being part of the car scene.
------------------------------------
I got my first jacket patch that time from Daytona.
------------------------------------
Later on when jackets went on sale at JM Fields, I bought a variety of Navy Blue jackets for the official MacDill Sports Car Club jacket...and I bought out ALL of them at every JM Fields that had any.......a coincidence that they had just gone on sale after I did the artwork for "The Prototype", the newsletter of MacDill Sports Car Club........which was coincidentally the identical collar and pocket style. Over time I acquired plenty of patches and sewed them on by hand close together with "invisible stitching"........and added a bunch more over the years for every track and every race I went to. Later I became a corner worker with Flagging and communications.
---------------------------
The year I was voted outstanding member, MSCC agreed to let me to buy my own trophy, which placed me in Brown's Trophies on MacDill Avenue, where I met the sweetest girl ever, and who became my wife. She went with me to the races and everywhere else. All our friends were racers. I have a picture of her sitting in infield turn one...... looking bored.......but she never complained.........and she could drive! When you find a woman who can really drive, they are usually a LOT faster than the guys. We had also gone together to SCCA race driver's school together.......which did not hurt...... lol
---------------------------
On vacation one year she out drove two cars on the same day on the Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolinas unofficial road course....in my championship-winning Datsun autocross car. I still have the car in my garage.
I still have the jacket.......and a pocket full of race patches I never had time to sew on. I have a drawer of non-race patches of places we went to on our vacations......
I still have our Coleman race cooler.......and her? She found a better deal on a husband.
I knew him and he was not a racer.
But she will always drive performance cars.........and never get ripped off on a car repair.
-----------------------------
Infield turn one, Daytona, had the timing/scoring trailer, with a flip clock placed inside the guard rail,
and we wrote down the numbers as our assigned car passed it. I arrived early and the guy I was relieving handed me three cards, and said: "Here. You can time mine. They are leading the race." And he ran out the door!
-----------------------------
Holy poot!
He handed me the three leading porsches! The same ones in this video. I was under pressure now. After a few laps you knew when to expect them to come around and could watch the flip clock for them to appear. In your spare time you could calculate and write down what their lap time had been. After awhile, it became a little boring.
-----------------------------
We had 3 or 4 hour shifts and the passes we got allowed us to go into the pits, and anywhere around the speedway. Some years it was cold, some years it was hot but It was always fun.
Dave and Sheila Haskard (also of MacDill Sports Car Club) kept a continuously running strip of car numbers as they went by the finish line.
I have no idea how they stayed awake for 24 hours. I did not have that much dedication. We went into the pits and other places, exploring every part of the pits and paddock in our off time. Looking at cars making pit stops, collecting press releases............. which I later used to write articles for The Prototype, MacDill Sports Car Club's newsletter.
And sometimes we would sleep...in the reclining seats of my Bertone Simca, My AMC Gremlin, rented a tent
eventually....snugged up together in a sleeping bag.....
----------------------------
I read Autoweek and stories by Brock Yates in Car and Driver magazine and learned to be a writer.....I think that I have been a newsletter writer ever since I bought a car.....
whether anyone else thinks that or not....... lol

I read Autoweek and stories by Brock Yates in Car and Driver magazine and learned to be a writer.....I think that I have been a newsletter writer ever since I bought a car.....
whether anyone else thinks that or not....... lol
