I remember my "final exam", at Castle AFB, after 6 months of B-52 training. I pulled out on to the runway and COULDN'T SEE A THING. Talk about Fog. All I could see was ONE stripe on the runway, just below the nose of the aircraft. I thought: "Well so much for today's flight". Uh..Uhhhhh! The IP said "Set your compass on the runway heading and just don't let the compass pointer wander when when you're on your takeoff run." "Holy sh-t", I thought, "You gotta be kiddin!". Well I did what I was told...and pushed in the throttles..and off we went...into the "Wild Blue Yonder". NEVER made an IFR takeoff...before or after that flight.

I have pictures of Stratofortresses being chopped into three pieces by a giant blade
at Davis Monthan AFB, as a Russian observed, and signed them off as destroyed.

Some of those planes were veterans of Desert Storm and still usable.

Meanwhile, Russia re-classified THEIR bombers on paper and kept them ALL!

Funny story(IIRC): Back in the 1990's, the USAF tried to retire the B-52, but Congressional oversight required an independent report. They got the report; It basically said, 'these 40 year old planes had at LEAST another 50 years left on them' The USAF was NOT happy; they wanted some new toys

At 28.40 in the video the narrator says "and when a B-52 with four 50 megaton bombs crashes". The US never made a 50 megaton bomb. Some early test bombs accidentally yielded above 10 megatons but most US bombs were under 2 megatons. Not saying a 2 megaton bomb could not ruin your day. The Soviets dropped a 50 megaton bomb. It was found to be overly destructive. H-bombs do not have any theoretical limit to their yield, yet they have a practical one.
