skinnier super grip tires or wider less grip tires
if you had the choice between a
215 45 17 advan neova
and a
245 40 17 avs db
for the rear of your SR powered 240 car designed for drift
which would you pick and why?

i would go with the wider tire. first off is wheel protection. second, the wider tire should give off more smoke( if setup is for competition) because it has more surface area. third is with the lower profile is should have less sidewall flex, giving more solid feedback to the driver.
just my 02.
just my 02.

go with the stickier of the two. smaller tire will stretch and reduce your sidewall flex and the higher traction compound will provide stability higher speed runs. a wider less traction tire will only simulate a slightly higher traction coefficient will not providing the true grip needed. plus higher traction compunds usually wear a little more predictably than lower traction tires. (you dont see Toyo RA-1's chunking)

you have to remember that an RA-1 does'nt chunk because it is a completely different compound than a street tire. Almost all street tires, even with 160 treadwear like an AVS Sport will eventually chunk if you give them enough of a beating.
These are all good replies, keep them coming! I'm not going to post my answer until a few more people have chimed in.

i understand the logic behind that. i just used the RA1 as an extreme example, but i figured tires like the AVS sport would just powder off (or marble). thats cool. i think this is a question better answered with other variables put into place. i.e., what speeds are intended, ground surface, etc. i noticed all the falken guys love using the ST-115's and from what i gather is do partly in how they powder matched with their excellent grip.
its a tough call that i could see onyl answered through testing and trial and error. lord knows ive trialed...... and errored. hahaha

avs sports do perform a little bit better, but they still fall apart.. all street tires pretty much destroy them selves compared to an R compound.. it doesnt matter if youre on a visa or an avs sport, they all fall apart and suck about the same when youre comparing an R compound.
kinda like 10938109381039813098 vs infiniti.
10398130981309 is still way better than 1,000,000, but is still nothing compared to infiniti.

i would go with, depending, on the track surface and the speeds of the drifting to be involved.

i would probably go with the wider tire if the fitment issue was taken care of. the wider tire would not only give off more smoke, but it should alow you to cary a higher speed and and acheive more angle and be able to hold more angle longer cause of the extra grip and control the wider tire should give you. not quite sure on this cause i still think like the underpowered think, big and gripppy in the front ,smaller and crappy in the back.
