Default drifting (a swap question)

Hey what up.. i am somewhat new to the whole technical THING with engines, suspensions,so-on and so-forth..

Alright here it goes.. I currently have a 91 300zx N/A i have placed a body kit, painted the calipers, shifter just the little things..anyway i have come to the conclusion that the odds of bringing the VG30de up to par to run somewhere from the low 13's to the low 12's will be fukn' impossible......really. however I have also come to the understanding that there is a shop in tampa that is called zfever i always thought that this shop was nothing but a sales shop until a few days ago..... SO i emailed them with the quandry that i have about my engine and the possible swap to the VG30dettt.

This dude name doug emailed me back (he seems pretty cool). He tells me that the RELIABILLITY of the SWAPED VG-twinturbo is pretty shitty.. how ever he also informed me that i can perform a SR20DET swap for around the same price and have around the ssame amount of HP and redice the weight about 300-400lbs...
wned:
I have seen this on certain sites(z32.com), but i thought no one does swaps into the z32.. i called other shops in the tampa area(some that shall be named nameless) but when i called them asking this type of question they said that the srswap was not worth it due to the SMALL engine-bay and the platform. I am currently receiving a settlement and I was considering buyuing a 240 and doing a sr swap but NOW with this info is just might be worth my wild.

Just think of the possibilites. 450rwhp +, (currently the z32 has a 55:45 weight ratio(but with the swap this could just dorp it enough to have a straight 50:50. road racing here i come..ALSO think of the supras(in the JGTC) switching out the 2JZ for the turbo 4cyl out of the MR-S so they can achieve a50:50 weight ratio. however the info on the supras was a few years back i know that the JGTC has changed some of the rules so they may have switched the engines in the supras again maybe a 8cyl out of a tundra.. turbo maybe..

i know that the z32 is a fairly heavy car (weighing in at i believe around 3300.... but also i have been reading on the whole drifting THING and i seems pretty kewl i wondered if i did this to my 300 redicing the weight would this be enough for drifting(with enough HP and suspension..)plus from what I can see happening(sorry to say) is that the 240 is becoming the next civic....BUT the 240 is everything that the civic wasn't.. rear wheel drive.. turbo. only in a 2door not a family car.. ya know....

sorry AD-HD kicking in again... so the basic question is has anyone in the area done this(or had this done) and has had any problems with it. and how do you like it compaired to the vg30de that you had in there before.. thanks for the input

-GiDDeNz-

p.s. this is post from the nissan tech forum and i would like some of the drifters opinions. because drifting is one of the reasons that i got the Z in the 1st place, BUT .....I have some info on the wieghts of the s13 and s14 and the 300zx. all of these with swaps i think that you might like or dislike this transformation. If you do or don't like it let me get your opinion about this issue i could really use your input... thanx

these are the places that i know of that performe that this kind of swaps.. secret services(dk) xat(no) zfever(yes) turbo toys (dk)

are you aware of the cost involved in doing 450rwhp? are you also aware of the cost of doing an SR into a Z32?

i could list off tons of things id like to do, whether I can afford them or not is a different story.

in an honest opinion, i would think you would be better doing an S13 chasis with a swap as opposed to a z32. The S13 is a much simpler means to an end, and a better platform for drift IMHO.

sell the z dude. if you can't drift enough in the N/A motor you don't need more power.. the n/a motor does plenty to slide.

if u care about the 1/4 times in a car u want to drift.. that is crazy. ur going to deminish performance of ur car by drifting it. stick with drag racing or stick with real racing the chassis seems too big for an SR.. too wide and short to
drift good? i dunna.. i wouldnt do it, id throw that large sum into an s-chassis like garage battle said

JGTC cars are not stock cars with motor swaps. so they never pulled out a 2jz to put in a 4cyl engine, they built a race car with a 4cyl engine to look like a supra. also that 4cyl was not from a mr-s sence the mr-s wasent even designed at the time and un like popular belief the motor is not a 3s-gte from a mr2, but it is somwhat related, but thats not important.

how about a RB26 swap? i would really like to see this swap done.

i kind of figured that everyone would oppose the swap but turbo i am not a toyo guybut thanx for correcting me on that note..and 1 of the reasons that i am not going to do the rb swap is it is expected and i kind of want to suprise them.. the s14 with a ka motor only weighs 2859lbs andthe 300zx with a vg30de only weighs in at 3313.... here are theIMPORTMODIFICATIONS.COM:

Nissan 240SX
Stock Weight - 2859lbs
Stock Wheel Weight - 22lbs each/without tires
The Nissan 240SX's weigh approximately 2859lbs, depending on the model, with a max difference of roughly 100 pounds from heaviest model to lightest. Dividing by the horsepower of 155, we get about 18.4lbs/hp.
So roughly every 18.4 lbs removed from the cars weight will add an effective 1 hp.
Gas weighs about 8lbs/gal so 16 gallons in the tank weighs 128lbs. If you have only 1 gallon in the tank, its almost a 7 horsepower equivalent difference. A passenger can make even a bigger difference, not to mention the drivers weight.
You can easily remove things like the spare tire and jack, the floor mats, the rear seats, interior panels and anything else.

I also looked on the site and i found out that the amout of shit that you can remove from the car to make it lighter like the floormats, spare allthe cushions..etc.. and replacing the hood front bumper, fenders, doors(fiberglass) trunk/hatch, wheels.. you maynot know this BUT VOLK,ADVAN,VELOX make very very light wheels(11lbs) and even the what you would call OFF-BRAND/budget wheels like REV, KONIG,NZO,speedy, le list goes on and on. make wheels for aroung 14-16lbs. alot lighter that the 22lb wheels that come stock.anyway.. so the silvia weighs about 3000lbs anyway.. also her s the numbers for the 300zx :

Twin Turbo Z32:
1996 - 3502 lbs.
1995 - 3517 lbs.
1994 - 3517 lbs.
1993 - 3474 lbs.
1992 - 3474 lbs.
1991 - 3474 lbs.
1990 - 3414 lbs.

N/A Z32
1996 - 3320 lbs.
1995 - 3332 lbs.
1994 - 3332 lbs.
1993 - 3219 lbs.
1992 - 3219 lbs.
1991 - 3219 lbs.
1990 - 3219 lbs.

N/A Z32 2+2
1996 - 3401 lbs.
1995 - 3413 lbs.
1994 - 3413 lbs.
1993 - 3313 lbs.
1992 - 3313 lbs.
1991 - 3313 lbs. - this is the model that i OWN-
1990 - 3313 lbs.

N/A Z32 Convertable
1996 - 3401 lbs.
1995 - 3446 lbs.
1994 - 3446 lbs.
1993 - 3432 lbs.

And thats what I have found. If anyone finds different info point it out and I will gladly edit this post. This is the best I could do, and didn't have many sources to verify with. Sources include: edmunds.com, cars.com, and caranddriver.com

now here is the math of the 300zx(na) Vs. 240sx(if a vg30de swap had been placed AND the comparison of the 300zx(with the sr20det swap) and the 240sx(bone stock). i hope you can see where i am coming from..
back to the SR20DET the company Z-fever will do a bone stock transplant for $4500 this includes the labor and the engine, trans, ecu, and i believe working A/C.. not bad.. this is stage 1 but stage 3 is 385rwhp

so far everyone haas opposed this swap...but look at the numbers..ok

3313 2859
- 350 = 300zx +350 =240sx
------- ---------
2963 3209

3313lbs >300zx with vg30de 222hp
-3209lbs >240sx with SR20det(s14) 220hp
--------
104lbs >diffrence between the 300zx(na) and the 240sx(SR)

when you really look at it the diffrence between the 2 cars is only 2lbs and 5rwhp......... it is a minimal yet significant diffrence.

due to this fact that i have found out i can deffinently see that the this hybrid will soon be what we will be seeing in the future of sport compact cars, if not in sport compact definently in drifting... i think that this might even rival the FD3s and the S13/S14 as the pride fo the drifting community....(JUST THINK ABOUT IT)

So in theory the engine weight is what makes the 300zx such a heavy car and if i drop a SR20det in this will remarcabally reduce athe weight of the car.give it 50:50weight distrubution plus IT IS DIFFRENT...and diffrent is good so.. let me know what your opinion is on this situation.. thanx for the input.

-GiDDeNz-

ps i am comparing the weight of the 300zx with a sr20det to the weight of the 240zx with a ka24 not a sr20det i think that the total weight of the 240 with the sr20det would be a litle higher due to the additional parts that are on a turbo motor.. anyway i hope that you enjoy the info that I place on the forum( and MATTBACK great job on D-DAY; oh also i know that you skilled in the ways of the 240sx ,sr20, s13,s14,s15 does SS do this kind of swap and if you find any of my numbers incorrect please correct them thanks
