USDRIFT @ Ocala GP, 4/4/04
hey all, i dont know what happened on the last topic that this event was addressed, but there were some things that i wanted to clear up.
john here is talkin about me, mike from orlando, and im not helpin to coordinate but i am helping to promote it. the guys who ARE coordinating it asked me to come up and check out the track with the grassroots guys to see how it would be for the event in april.
...holy crap, this place is nice. I was worried thinking it was a GoKart track, but its built for shifter karts, and could basically double as a mid-speed solo2 course.
the course is PLENTY wide. There was another guy with an s14 there that day named Tony Shultz, and he was feinting the whole way down to the first turn. if anyone has ever been there, its a little like the test track in gainesville, only a lot smaller, and the road is a lot smoother surface. the turns are also a little tighter, and it makes the entire back half of the Ocala course pretty technical.
ANYWAY
this is a picture my friend moffet posted in the original thread, a picture off the OGP website that shows what the track is like.
this is a picture of how it will probably be set up
here the start and the finish are at the same place. we were talking about not using the last turn at all and having the finish be right after the tight right hairpin. it might end up that way if we cant fit enough cars in the line like it is in the picture, but its pretty likely that the start will be in the same place.
there isnt a HUGE area for the spectators in the bleachers, but if this is going to be as big as im thinking it will be, people will be lined along the fence of the whole course because there is plenty of room there.
You all should come out, its going to be a drift bonanza. weve got plenty of vendors and sponsors who are going to be out too, so even if youre not "competing" (and i say "competing" because its really just about pushing the car and having a blast) you should DEFINITELY come.

Heres the address for anyone asking directions, you can probably mapquest it, but what it doesnt tell you is that when youre getting there, its behind like a flea market or something, and you cant really see it from the road. otherwise its ridiculously easy to find, but you should still make sure you take down the number or call a friend thats already found the place.
ill be at DDAY this weekend on the 21st, and ill have an assload of fliers for anyone that wants some. look for the tall lanky kid in the green s14.

well, I've done a 180 on this one...sounds like it might be cool. I was talking to one of my friends in orlando and he's helping coordinate it, said it will be like a drifting 'school', free drift, and comp....but they aren't really sure about the comp or not.

as you can see plenty of width on the track, this picture is of the area leading to the tight right hairpin, and you can see the oval behind my car
this is the pit area, looking towards the track
this is where cars will be lining up to start runs. you can see the judge booth up the track on the right side..
this is tonys s14 and one of the grassroots cars they were testing that day.

well, as it turns out, the new owner of OGP happens to befriend GRM. if grm wasn't taking part in it, it wouldn't be existing, but thanks to GRM its still going on.
