First, let it be known that Rob Fleming is working with me to try to set up some drift events there. If we get it all together, they will be co-hosted by the SunRiders and the 240 club, or something like that. I'll post details as they become available.

To put on an event of this type, you need at least 5 things:

1. People to make it happen.
2. An organizational plan (including rules, classing, scoring and that sort of thing)
3. A site.
4. Equipment (cones, PA, etc)
5. Insurance.

Those last three things can be fairly costly, which is why Rob is choosing to co-host events with an established club to start with.

Again, Rob and I are trying to put something together. Our goal is to make it as affordable as an autocross, and give people an outlet to safely practice their drifting skills.

What else do you want to know?

Hi, I'm new to tampa and this board, But I'm from california and have been to a few drift events (watched) and a club4ag drift day (drifted).

The events I went to were just cones setup in a parking lot (irwindale speedway), were the "good" drifters showed off. But on the drift day we went to an actual race track and drifted it. (www.thunderhill.com) It was a LOT of fun. It wasn't a competition at all, just a day where we could drive the track all we wanted and pratice drifting around the corners.

Talk to people from club4ag.com, they got events started on the west coast, maybe they could help start one here.

I'll definatly go.

yeah, what the hell?
same with this autocross bullshit, all it is is people driving slowly around a bunch of cones...top speeds are like what? 60 or 70 mph? shit, i go faster than that on the interstate every day! Who wants to watch that...I get more amusement out of a 12 pack and a slingshot at the local playground

Loren is generously offering to help us do this. The current format were working with will consist of a small class session in the early part of the morning, then the remainder of the day will be drift runs on a simple course, that may change 2-3 times during the day.

It will allow for maximum seat time and learning. If someone is doing poorly, we will attempt to help. There should be at least 4 of us on hand to offer assistance in the basic skills. Those without LSD will have a rough time out there....so keep that in mind.

Also, spectating will not be allowed past who you've brought with you...until we get everything figured out (this may change). In keeping with the regulations of an 'auto-x' event, there are limitations and distances that must be kept in order for it to be safe.

We'll be able to announce the date at least one month in advance. I'm very curious to see what and who will come out of the wood work for this one....as we dont have an idea of how many drifters there are in the area, nor the skill levels associated.

After doing 2-3 of these 'drift days' we should have a good idea of how many drifters we have in the area, and allow us to start planning a drift competition. We want this to be loads of fun for everyone...the best fun learning drifting is doing it.
