IHRA: Millican receives hometown honor

IHRA legend Clay Millican was honored recently by his hometown of Drummonds, Tennessee, which dedicated a sign that will be placed at the city limits that says, "Drummonds, Tennessee, Home of Clay Millican, Top Fuel World Champion." He won six Top Fuel IHRA titles and 51 national events and has the most titles in a season over any other driver in IHRA history.

According to a story in the Covington Times by sports editor Jeff Ireland, about 100 people were at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church to honor Millican. The ceremony included the reading of proclamations honoring Millican from Tipton County, Shelby County and Tennessee.
Ireland noted that Millican got choked up when he thanked his family and friends. "This is crazy," he said. "I'm just a guy who liked to work on cars, and now I have a sign."
The Covington Leader story said Millican had opportunities to take racecar driving jobs that meant he'd have to leave Drummonds, but he declined them all. "I never planned on going anywhere, and I'm not going to."
Ireland's story had a poignant ending: "After Millican spoke, he had one last thing to do. His son, Dalton Millican, was killed in a motorcyle accident in August of 2015. He was 22 and a professional BMX and monster truck driver.
