Small blocks have that strange aluminum water pump/front piece that uses a gasket. O have blown an intake gasket on the water xover and it hydro locked the block, #1 was full of water,shot about 10ft in the air when I took the spark plug out and turned the engine over by hand.

Possible, I would go ahead and replace the intake and both head gaskets, just in case that way you only ripp the top end open once. If it still has water in the oil then it's the front aluminum peice that is leaking.
