Default toll tags are completely dormant until you drive under a reader

quote:Originally Posted by chris.fI am in Orlando. Toll by plate isn't an option right now. Expressway Authority is a mess and behind the times at the moment. The service worker was very clear about my transponder being inside the vehicle as there is a lot theft and toll fraud here and I sm at my own risk. Crime is real bad out here and I dont want to make petty toll crime attractive, in addition to having my plates stolen or swapped from time to time. I spent 45 minutes with their supervisor trying to find a way to make my transponder work without interfering with the HF mic. The service worker noticed the windshield looks a little darker than other Chargers (still legal and not tinted). He said possibly replaced with non OEM which is making transponders harder to read and possibly interfering with the HF.. This is only theory nothing proven. The windshield was replaced according to the service records from previous owner, but no details to the brand was provided.
I understood that you are in Orlando because you had said E-Pass. I had one. NC offers a toll tag that inter-operates with with both the EZ-Pass states and E-Pass / Sun Pass systems. What I am suggesting is that you get an NC account - costs nothing other than the $7.00 tag. Gets you way past the "behind the times" agency.

Also, what I am suggesting is that the tag is very much inside the vehicle. Not even visible. The front of your Charger is all plastic and completely transparent to the RF that is used to query the tag - regular windshield safety glass attenuates alot more based on my measurements - triggered the tag to transmit, and measured the response. I've had it there in two different Chargers for three years and have had no issues in EZ-Pass areas, NC or in Florida. It's not exposed to rain since it's way above the opening in front of the car. The windshield super sticky tabs have held without issue, and if it were to fall off, it probably will be trapped. If it does make it out, it will likely be run over and destroyed so fraud would be unlikely. You just declare it damaged, and pay $7.40 again.

One thing from your post I'm not really understanding is that I think I understood you believe the toll tag is interfering with the handsfree mic in some way. These toll tags are completely dormant until you drive under a reader. The reader transmits a concentrated beam of RF on 915 Mhz. That wakes the tag - in the case of the battery powered tags - and it responds back with it's serial number. The tag's output in any mode is less than 1 milliwatt for a fraction of a second. If it were making any sort of RF that could possibly interfere with anything, the battery would be dead in less than a day. Sticker tags are literally powered by the RF beam, and have no onboard power source.

First pic is what the top area of where the tag is. Second is where the tag is actually mounted - basically under the top of the grill.Attached Thumbnails
