Default to srt-4 or to not srt-4?

well since non of you have a 1st gen for sale on T.R... i've been looking at some srt-4's

it will take me about another month to get one if i do so i am going to ask questions now.

I've owned my fair share of 1st and 2nd gen neons, and i know that the tranny is not the best. in my 1st gen 2nd and 4th gear syncros ( spelling). on the 2nd gen it was reverse and 5th. Does this shit still happen on the srt-4's? and is it really worth 10K for a 60-75k mile car? I am not to sure about this because i have never owned a used car that was boosted. i know what to look for on an N/A car. i have no idea how to check if the turbo is in bad shape ( except for the shaft play) . i've only owned one boosted car and i only had that for about 2 months. So if somebody would be nice enough to give me a rundown on what to look for when looking for a used srt-4. Thanks T.R

Most common issue is 3rd gear synchro on SRT-4's. Depending on how the car is driven by an owner this issue will become vary apparent quickly. My car has almost 65k miles and I've yet to have any tranny problems. My wife's SRT-4 has 90k+ miles and no tranny problems.

I find the 05 transmissions to be a bit more notchy then 04's. 03 trannies don't come with LSD unless a previous owner swapped trans with an 04-05 or they put an lsd in their 03.

Typically at this moment you can get SRT-4's from 8-10k with around the mileage you mentioned and some less. Some are stock, some modded, some were modded and brought back to stock. You still have some trying to sell their's in the 11k-15k range and some even more.

Other then that they aren't bad cars at all. IMO they are very reliable if you keep up with maintenance and if you don't rag on them 24/7 or better yet slap a bunch of parts on them at once and not be able to tell which of the parts is giving you problems/headaches.

I recommend you having someone who knows these cars go with you when looking at them to make sure they are mechanically sound.

ahhh thank you very much that was the info i was looking for rep.

So i should look at the 04-05 due to the LSD being in the tranny. Would it be a big headache to put the lsd in the 03 if i happened to come upon one?

03s lack lsd but run strongest of all years but on stock pcm are very picky not to mention it accepts modifications made for all years unlike the 05s

04s improved on 03s and are the most common of all 3 model years not to mention it accepts modifications made for all years unlike the 05s

05s are the redheaded step children, will run on 03-04pcms at the expense of the battery light and are the most prone to tranny issues because in an attempt to improve on the 04 gearset Dodge managed to make it more fragile.

milage is almost irrelevant depending on price and condition but i will say that if you grab one with 60-100k miles make sure the first thing you do is:

-new coil
-new plug wires
-trans flush/refill
-timing belt replacement
*have water pump visually inspected
*would be best time to upgrade oil pump if your plans are to make big hp
-oil change
-coolant flush/refill
-inspect and top off the remaining fluids

ive had the opportunity to take many SRT4s from to stock to wild and back to stock, know these things like the back of my hands so if you have any questions dumb or not feel free to contact me.
