Default 1st Gens?

How well do they hold up on high mileage 90k+ and are the SOHC reliable or are they junk or good DD? Just looking to get some background on theses cars anything in particular with the 96 models?? Thanks for your help guys.

Just check it and make sure that it has no major problems, and do regular maintenance to it. If it hasn't had the headgasket changed to the MLS one, it will need it, but it's probably not likely that it hasn't had it done. As for the SOHC, some people swear by it, I personally swing two sticks, and wouldn't own a SOHC except for daily driving. But the SOHC has more torque, just not as much of a top end as the DOHC.

And oh, that's pretty low miles for a '96, I have 89k on my '99.

Thanks for the info man greatly appreciated anyone else's opinions will be appreciated as well. Yeah the one I'm lookin at has new fuel pump, water pump, head gasket, and some other stuff. And it's only 96,000 miles for a 10 yr old car doesn't sound too bad.

A '96 with that low of miles is a nice find. i currently have a '98 sohc with 52k miles I used to have a '99 sohc with 92k that ran fine until engine knock. Regular maintenance is pretty much key for any car. Not driving it like you stole it constantly helps as well. A sensor or two may die on you from time to time but those are quick and cheap to fix.

well, if it makes any difference, my 95 DOHC(yes, still the original old style headgasket, which btw is the same between SOHC and DOHC) with 109k is still running strong with no real problems(other than blown shocks anyway), SOHC cars I have seen last on the original motor to 150K+....I have also seen them die before then as well, its all in how you take care of the car

Keep up with the maintenance, take it to a dodge dealer to have a mechanic look at so it can get a full check over. Better safe than sorry.

sounds like a good car. mie is a 99 with 70K miles and i really havent had any major mechanical problems with it. i dont know about going to a dealer.... just drive it and see if anything sounds weird.i lost any trust in a dealership after taking my car to plaza dodge and having over $1,000 of parts changed(under warrantee) to later still have the problem and all it was was a worn out bushing that a spray of lube fixed.
