What in the name of Frosted Flakes is the purpose of a Top Fuel Dragster wing on a 16 second import? Do they really get ANY benefit from the wing other than cosmetic reasons? Im not talking about the Subaru WRX and its wing of death, from what im told that thing really works. Im talking about the wing that is store bought and bolted down to the rear of their trunk. Im not trying to stir up any bee's nest here im just trying to understand. When I asked a Ricer a long time back he said that it really works........ does it?

 

sure it really works...at speeds over 110 maybe, faster than most of them have ever gone, I think they are stupid and tacky myself, but then the stock wing works fine for me, designed by people who built the car and know its aerodynamic characteristics, but unless your constantly going 120mph+ there is absolutley no reason for an aftermarket wing, much less one of those parkbenches

Every generation of car enthusists try and make there car look similar to the bad ass race cars of the time. Back in the 60's that meant 4 feet off the ground with rear tires so big that the rear of the car was cut out, small skinny tires in front, hood scoops, or cowl induction hoods (both of which only work at high speeds), long shifters, wood grain steering wheels.

Look at lameans (spelling?) and other top forms of racing today and you will see the what todays entusists are going to aspire to look like. Me included cause i love cars. Why does it matter if a car has a wing or FWD if the person driving it loves cars just like you? Is it like a racest type of thing cause they don't have the same car as you or the same taste as you?

putting one of those wings on a front wheel drive car with no front spliter, makes your car handle worse at any speed. downforce in the back and none in the front would make the frontend light at speeds.

The first ugly wing car I saw was on a Superbird. I think they were on the Charger Daytona first? They sure were not for cosmetics. Ugly in a cool 200mph sort of way.

 

i had one at one time but i got it cheap and made money on i when i sold it. they are useless and you feel nothing under 75mph, at high speeds it is worse you can feel the downforce on the rear which doesnt help traction or anything. all it did was push down and dent my trunk lid where the mounts were. people like them because it makes there car look fast but in reality i would think they would slow you down more than anything.
