ok so I have roadrunner at my house and I bought a networking kit and Im trying to network the computers. I can get them to recognize each other but then I cant connect online. The switch has 5 ports in the back and one uplink port. If I connect the roadrunner cable to the uplink port it doesnt work but when I connect it directly to my pc it works fine. Can anybody help???

its just two computers. The thing is that when I connect the modem to the hub I cant get online at all. I got the two computers networked but I cant get roadrunner to work. In order for me to get online I have to disconnect my computer from the hub and connect the modem to my computer otherwise it doesnt work.

With only one IP addy from RoadRunner you will need to have one PC set to DHCP so it auto gets its IP addy from RoarRunner. The other machine will not be able to get online without a second IP from RR however and unless you run two NICs in the machine that is online you will not be able to see either machine.

Thats the sad thing.. you almost have to multihome it without a second IP. You could do what I did and setup an NT server with 2 NICs configure one for Roarrunner and send it straight to the modem then set the other nic for a private net like 10.10.10.10 or something and hook that one to your hub then set your other machines up on the 10 net then config MS Proxy server and everyone gets on

I currently run 4 PCs 2 Notebooks and 2 servers off one RR connection this way. It takes a bit of knowledge to setup but if you have a buddy in the business its a couple hour job.

well said Robert.....

Also if your just not getting a link light on the hub port that the modem is connected to you may need to get a crossover cable. I cant remember if I use one at home or not. Sometimes there is an uplink port on the hub as well that does the same thing as a crossover cable.

Id comeover and do it for a 12 pack but your in Hawaii....

make sure the uplink switch is on uplink and the incomming signal is on the port closest to the switch.

NIC??? Is that a network card? If it is are you saying that I need to have two network cards on the computer with roadrunner? Also how can I get the other computer to be able to connect to roadrunner without getting a second ip? Is it even possible?

If you wish to have more than one PC connected then you must do what we call Multihoming. A Multihomed system requires the computer to actually be a part of TWO Networks. Your home/Office network and an external Network (ie Roadrunner). To make a PC reside on multiple networks requires a Network card (NIC Network Interface Card) for each network you wish to participate in.

The simplest way around this is simply to pay the additional $10 a month for another RR IP addy. HOWEVER you will STILL not be able to have direct network connections with the other PC at your home. If you wished to have BOTH PC talk to each other Via LAN and ALSO have RR connectivety with both there are TWO ways to accomplish this.

1.) Install TWO NICs in each machine Pay for an additonal RR IP set one NIC in each machine for DHCP for the RR and set the other NIC in each machine with a specific hard IP addy on the same subnet (I know it sounds tricky but its not). Then both machines will see RR and each other.

2.) Install Windows NT Server on one machine or get a older PC you can get for cheap. Connect it directly to RR with one NIC and add another NIC for your home LAN. Setup Proxy services on the NT machine (This CAN be tricky for a novice). Then the NT server is the only machine actually on the Internet and you can add as many machines to the other side of the server as you wish. The NT server actually acts like a Firewall folks wishing to attack your connection actually hit the server and not your machine directly. Its safe its fairly fast (With a stout enough NT server) and its relatively cheap (If you have a spare PC and a copy of NT Server).

I am sorry there isnt a simple Plug this in nd turn this to setting B type answer for you.

actually you can communicate between both computers straight through the hub. windows 98 allows for it. Ive been doing it for 2 years now. RR with the extra ip and using the hub as the Lan you just have to setup the networking settings on both computers identical especially with the workgroup. windows 2000 will actually search for you as long as the other machine is set up to allow for net working. Also see sharing under the hard drives properties list.
