Basic Benefits of Massage 101 :

From a physiological or mechanical engineering point of view, massage increases the lubrication between muscle fibers and allows the muscle to move optimally. Muscle fibers are designed to work independently of each other. When muscles dry out, or dehydrate, the fibers stick together and the muscle becomes stiff or ridged. As fluid is reintroduced, the muscle softens and regains its flexibility. As circulation increases between the muscle fibers, nutrients reach the cells and toxins are carried off more efficiently.

When muscle fibers are stuck together, fluid is no longer able to pass between these fibers, causing lack of circulation. Lack of circulation causes lack of oxygen and in turn lack of oxygen causes pain.

Aging is largely a process of dehydration. The less water in the body, the more quickly we age. As we dehydrate, we begin to shrink and as our muscles become smaller, our skin begins to wrinkle. Drinking lots of water and having regular massage is a great way to get rid of wrinkles.

Dan, I know you still got some issues with your neck and back and the chiropractor should help some. Keep in mind after repetitious movements that problem may come back. The chiro will mainly adjust the bones and joints so the muscle will adapt to those joint manipulations. Massage therapy approaches the issue on an opposite end of the spectrum by manipulating the muscles only which are attached to those joints. It promotes a healthy posture when those muscles start to relax and allow those bones to fall in place. I'd suggest going somewhere where a massage therapist can warm up those cold muscles before the doc starts crackalackin

Craig, thats what I'm in business for try using heat packs or get in a hot tub in the meantime until you call me. That should help releave some pain and tension in those muscles. Stretching won't hurt either I can show you some stretching exercises too.
