Home buying is fun. 
Get with a realtor and have him/her put you into an MLS search engine. This way you'll get periodical automatic email updates on new properties in areas you are looking. Doesn't eliminate all of the driving around and frustration, but it certainly helps the search. Scott did this for us and we found TONS more houses compared to our driving around/Realtor.com searching.

You would be suprised how many you miss when looking on your own. Everything sells so quickly now it never makes it to third party sites.
