Default Another Credit Related Question

Go to use my Capital One card to fill up on gas today. It gets declined. Very strange since I don't run my cards up to their limit.

Go home and open up the statement I just got in the mail today. I have a past due fee from last month of $35. Strange. I always pay my bills well ahead of their due date.

Go to my bank online to see what was going on with my check. Well there was no check. Capital One decided not to send me a statement for last month. Call up Capital One and get the autmated bastard who tells me my account is further suspended until I pay my min payment of this month. Can I talk to someone at 9pm? Nope, have to wait until tomorrow to talk to a "customer service representative".

First...is there any way I can get that fee taken off? This is the second time this has happened, but with another credit card. I have a history of NO late payments.

Second...if I just pay the fee, what sort of scar will this place on my credit?

All things considered, this is not what I need right now.

Probably no scar at all since you are usually prompt with your payments. It's been my experience that they won't report one late payment here or there to the credit bureaus.

I'd call during business hours, ask them to remove it, that you didnt get the bill... if you are persistent, they will most likely waive the fee, and let you pay the balance.

Why do you say that...?

I've never had a problem... I have online bill pay setup and never had an issue...??

Paper and checks is so... 20th century!

I've been fully electronic on my Discover card (only card I've had for a very long time other than my ATM/Mastercard that draws from my checking account) for several years. I don't even get a paper statement any more. They send me an email when my statement is available. They send me an email when my payment is close to being due. I can make a payment at any time by going out to their website and transferring funds from my checking account.

If you have reliable email, this is the way to go. No lost statements, no lost checks in the mail.

The other way to go is to never carry a balance on your credit card. Always pay it off in full at the end of the month. If you need to buy something that you can't pay for in a month, either save up or get a real loan (car loans and home equity loans are great for this kind of stuff) with a fixed interest rate and a fixed term. Credit card debt is bad! It's too easy to get into and too hard to get out of.

(and I think this is my first post in La Casa... um... Hi)
