I can definately understand how it would be different being there with a "guide" of sorts... I still say there is plenty to do, but again most of the times I was downtown for fun were just day trips for this or that. My parents lived there for 4 months in a high-rise company condo on Michigan avenue, and I know my mom and sister had a blast in the city on their own at the time.
So did you check out the "attractions" like the aquarium, musems, gallery, any of the tours, etc...
I will also say that some of the events they hold are absolutely amazing. 4th of July is absolutely amazing along the waterfront! Taste of Chicago, The Air and Water show, Ravinia music festival, sports festivals, etc... are all great times to be had (nothing like walking down blocked off downtown chicago streets drunk as hell feeling all patriotic, lol!).
Hell I used to have a blast just playing football in a league on the weekends then going drinking in the various bars afterwards.
It's too bad your trip wasn't up to your expectations. Hopefully you came away with some nice memories at least.
