Well I have spent the past four weeks battling a friggin' oil leak. When I installed some adjustable cam gears a little while back I went ahead and changed out the timing belt, water pump, and oil pump. Well all was fine until I noticed a little bit of oil dripping from the pan. I automatically kicked myself for doing a shitty job on sealing the oil pan and got ready to redo it. Well I bought a new gasket, followed the recommended torque pattern, buttoned it up, took it for a drive...still leaking. Dumbfounded I stared extra hard at the shop manual, looking for anything I could have possibly done wrong. Dropped the pan again and redid the gasket. Test drive...still leaking. WTF?!?! Went ahead and bought another new gasket, and tried again. At this point if the shop manual said to piss in the gas tank while kicking a puppy I would have done it without thinking twice. Anyways, put the new gasket in and...surprise...still leaking. HOLY FRIGGIN' HELL!!!! FUCK THIS!!! Out comes the RTV sealant and I coat the entire pan and block. Let it set up, slap it together, test drive it....guess what? Yup...GOD DAMNED OIL LEAK!!! WHY ME!?!?! WHY!!?!?!?!?! At this point I decide that there is only one thing to do. Buy a new pan because this old pan is obviously warped (it actually did rock a little on a flat surface). So fast forward a couple of days and the new pan is here. I slap it on, following the manual directions that I now know by heart and....voila...leak. It's at this point I cease to care and just drive the damned thing around. Screw my car. Well this past weekend I couldn't stand the fact that a simple gasket was royally kicking my ass so, a glutton for punishment, I go to change it yet again. It was during the removal of the header and tranny brace that I had an epiphany. Smell the oil Bill....yes smell the oil. So I grab the tranny brace and look at the little pool of oil that has gathered in it. I smell it...I....taste it (I'm desperate here, give me a break) and guess what? THIS SHIT AIN'T MOTOR OIL!!!!!! SON OF A BITCH!!!!! Ya, when I initially changed the belt and pumps I reinstalled my old A/C compressor. Turns out the damn thing blew a seal and was leaking oil down the mounting plate and slowly dripping it onto the pan gasket. This made it appear like the oil pan was to blame. Man...talk about the repair from hell. I swear that if I had to change the oil pan gasket another time I probably would have just set the damned thing on fire and rolled it into the street laughing. Bastard.
