Weird wireless router issue
Weird wireless router issue
First, I will start off by saying I am not the most knowledgable guy on computers, but I know quite a bit. Here is my issue:
I come home last night and jump on the computer. I notice that where it usually says Wireless Network Connection (linksys-g) it now says Wireless Network Connection (jackson). Alright, I figure that I will switch it back and remove that from my list. No dice, it keeps popping back on there. Hmmm. I try a few things and just now I unplugged the wireless router and lo and behold both a "default" and a "jackson" connection are still available. So I am thinking there is another wireless router that is pretty frigging powerful in one of my neighbors houses. Is there anything I can do and still retain the wireless shindig? Are they using my router/connection? Can they snoop around in my computer?
Thanks for any help. I'll be back on later tonight. For now, I am bypassing the router and unscrewing the antenna/disabling the router on this computer. Dammit!

what your describing isnt someone logged on to your network, what you need to do is (a) rename your network from default (b) turn on WEP and (c) hide your SSID, also changet your defautl password since all linksys routers are IP 192.168.2.1 user name [blank] password "administrator", also Im assuming your using XP, if so go into the wireless settings and specify the network, and only that network, dont list ANY or no SSID, and with WEP enabeled it will help.
Tom wha tI think keeps going on with yours is your DHCP tables are messed up and when your ISP givs you a new IP its not updating it automatically

Every time I change it (to enable WEP), it tells me that _____ is already configured. Made a new connection and it just sits there with a damn little x over it. I want to drop kick this POS.
I appreciate the leads, Jason. Must drink beer and curse at it later.

the obvious answer to the question is to call your internet provider and cancel your service. Take the $50 per month and buy beer.
On your computers make sure all unneeded ports and services are shut down and that there is no sharing enabled.

Took care of that long ago. It is kinda nice being able to just snag someone else's service. I wish I knew their computer's name/workgroup name. That would be fun.
