BMW’s motorsport division, know rather un-imaginatively as BMW Motorsport, has never been a stranger to Le Mans. But there’s no participation prizes at Le Mans, so how did BMW write themselves into the history books? BMW cars have been seen racing sporadically in Sarthe since 1939, and many claimed class wins. But these were always modified road cars, the equivalent of today’s GTE (in which BMW raced in 2018 and 2019), and so overall victory appeared allusive for the German marque.
