Movie Hill Climbing HD, shot in Bernex, High-Savoy, France, 2009 - short version. Motorcycle climbing race. Hill-climbing is an individual motorcycle race where the competitor is confronted with a natural, unpaved, extremely difficult coastline (more than 45% of gradient in general), or considered to be impassable. The goal is to get to the top as fast as possible or to climb as high as possible on the slope.

Regulations vary greatly depending on the location and most often the gear used are prototypes. Not to be confused with the Hillclimbing which takes place on traditional uphill roads and where time is the only discriminant. The impossible climb would be closer to the motocross.

This competition originated in the United States in the 1900s. The emerging brands of Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Excelsior motorcycles used coastal challenges to test their production. Hill-Climbing's first known event dates back to May 30, 1903.

The NYMC (New York Motorcycle Club) organized an event at Riverdale Hill. It is considered one of the oldest forms of motorcycle racing.
