Default Harley Started to Misfire

[h=1]Harley Started to Misfire[/h] My wife’s 2005 FLHTCUSE2 began to develop problems a few weeks ago. After a short ride, we stopped for her to get gas. On the way home her Harley started to misfire and run poorly. I lost sight of her so I pulled over. After about 15 mins she showed up and said her bike would not stay running. At each stop it would stall but always started after the fact. It died in the driveway. We tried to troubleshoot the problem but have been unsuccessful so far. Checked the fuel pump, getting gas, changed the plugs and checked the wires for leaks, no leaks. We then changed the coil with no success. The bike would start at high idle and then slow to a stall. We then did a “wild” code check on the motorcycle and got a code for the Powertrain), P1356-no fire at rear jug. Fixed the wire at the coil, and tried to start the bike again with the same result. I then did another code check and at P I got a blank screen and then a no rSP- no response? As you can see, I need help. My wife is a ride-aholoic and I have to live with her and 1 running motorcycle. It gets embarrassing riding on the back of your own motorcycle to keep peace in the house.

How do you know that “the fuel pump is getting fuel”? If you were chasing a fuel problem you would want to see what you have for, running fuel pressure. However, this problem sounds much more like a failing sensor. If you can not pick up any relevant codes on your own, you may need to submit to having a dealer plug in their scanalizer. If it takes them an hour labor time to come up with a definitive diagnosis, it may save you a lot of aggravation.

Had the same thing happen to me on my ’07 Electra Glide. Problem was a dirty air filter. Cleaned it (K&N) and all was good. Tip: do not oil the filter.

I have 2007 has no power to y&g wire so no fuel no spark so will turn over no start i have remade a new wire harness and the same thing wont start unless i run a hot wire to fuel fuse (y&g) wire then it fires rite up but starts running rich so its not rite but if i mess with four ground wires i will get power to wire but wont start so is it the ecm or bad ground. Should any ground have twelve volts. Before you ground it i feeling it has something to do with ign or headlamp wires or ground any suggestions

Customer Service
The yellow wire w/green tracer should only be +12 volts to your fuel pump. Has nothing to do with spark or ignition. Powering your fuel pump directly from your battery will not alter fuel delivery or mixture. Would suggest cleaning and securing any grounds in question. Test or replace your relays and test your fuses. Also, check for possible trouble codes.

Sounds like the concern started just after fueling. If so, I would drain the tank and float bowels and start with a fresh known good fuel source. We see it 2 or 3 times a year and usually in batches of 3 or 4 vehicles. If water gets into the supply tank it will go to the bottom. eventually it will build up until the pump starts to suck it out. At first it will suck a fixture of fuel and water so the vehicle will run as described.

I had an intermittent miss on my ’02 Road King. Would be great for a while and suddenly start cutting out. Found a bad wire on the start relay under the seat. Harley Mechanic said that was probably not the issue but replaced the relay, changed the wire connection and hasn’t missed a beat in two years.

I would think one or more spark plugs is most likely. I have had numerous instances of riders coming into the shop with just this story and although the plugs looked good nothing else checked out bad and a spark plug change corrected the problem immediately.

I guess alot of people had the same problem but it was different repairs to fix their bikes. I have a 2002 ultra classic and starting misfiring just like yours. My problem was I had fuel flow but no fuel pressure. I checked the pressure and had only 30 psi. I replaced the fuel filter and regulator (since i was there anyway) and my fuel pressure jumped to 65 psi and problem was fixed.

Mine would do the exact same thing, its a 2007 softail deluxe. It turned out the battery to be the problem. The reason its intermittent is the bike will start running weird in other words it would take a charge but if for some reason that charge did not hold for long the bike will start running weird again. So I went and change the battery and I’ve never had the problem since. Check your cranking amps voltage and then you’ll see clearly if it is in fact the battery that is the problem. This is the last thing I thought it would be myself as well, but then you are fuel injected now too correct? They need proper voltage to operate correct. Hope this helps.
