newbie here with a newbie question!
well, i bought my very first bike today, 1995 zx6r, the guy that had the bike (my boss by the way) had it in his garage for a year without starting it, ofcourse the carbs were block by the bad gas, i put some carb clearner on it i was carefull not to use alot of it. anyways finally got the bike to start after jumping it, it has a bad delay due to the carbs being nasty still, replaced the old fuel filter, drained all the bad gas, changed the oil and all the good stuffs, anyways earlier tonight i went to started after i got it to at least drive and went i took it around the bloc i stalled on me, went to jump it and when i hit the starter switch it made a sound like metal hitting metal and after that it makes a grinding noise when i try to started, is coming from the bottom somewhere near where the coolant resevoir is at, now i have no clue about bikes, this is my first bike can anyone help me and tell me what it is? the bike has 9k miles on it, has been rebuilt, and the starter switch is clicking still please help me!
how about a new battery. it will make the same sound when the battery is dead. (clicking, grinding)
I do not know about your specific bike, however some bikes have a pressed-on or other similarly cheap starter gear. Eveuntually the gear starts spinning on the shaft - causing what the rider thinks is grinding.
The other possibility is that the teeth on your starter or flywheel are broken off, most likely on your starter. Then you'd hear all kinds of cool metal gnashing together.
Either way, the culprit is almost certianly your starter. You just killed the battery because its an old battery and you tried to start the bike too many times.

ok cool, now the question is where can i get the parts from? when i bought the gas filter i went to 4 diferent places before i can get it, turns out pep boys really dont sell parts for my bike, i had to get a universal gas filter for it
wow...
I think you're deep in over your head but if you really want to try fixing the bike up yourself. find a bike shop(not a autoparts store) and get a book on your bike, a new battery and carb rebuild kit.
clean the carbs up so it will run when you do get it started. than work on the starting issue. a new batt may do it, but if the bike has been rebuilt but the guy hasn't started or ridden it in over a year. there may be a reason he parked it instead of dumping any more money into it.
good luck.
oh and I don't believe it myself, but a lot of people say that seafome shit works. try putting some of that in the tank with the gas. that way atleast if you keep playing with it without rebuilding the carbs. it may clean some of the junk out enough to run.
