Default Let's have a show of hands...

Who uses Unix at home and what flavor are you running?

I now have 2 of 4 of my systems running Ubuntu 8.10 Studio, and may be Windows free soon...

looking to start a thread since I do have some questions...

I'm not smart enough to run any of that stuff.

I only just my home computer for porn... windows seems to handle that ok. 80% of the time I'm surfing the net from my phone.

can't say you're never honest.

I'm just tired of MS to be honest. XP is fucking solid and has got to be one of the best most stable user friendly Operating Systems out. And they want us to move on to Vista... well fuck that. Having kids that means I'd have upgrade their systems to move to Vista. Not gonna happen...

Fortunately, for the technically inclined Linux seems to have made quite a few strides since I last used it towards a more user friendly OS. So I'm giving it another shot...

If I can pull this off, I wont have to worry about buying security products to keep adware and other shit off my systems...

But so far, I can tell you need some basics to get around and fix what doesn't work out of the box.

I have no problems really with vista, dunno what everyone bitches about. Hell im currently on a beta version of windows 7 and its damn solid.

XP has issues with staying on for more than a day or so btw, so its not perfect.

I wouldnt recommend to anyone that has a computer made with xp to upgrade to vista, youll be disappointed by the lack of performance from a machine never intended to run it. But if your pc comes with it then good for you and im sure you wont be as biased afterwards. As for free software there are loads of good stuff for windows.

Dude if you have daily issues with XP, you have other problems besides XP on your system.

I had 4 systems running XP at the house. I've only had to rebuild the 2 my kids use, cause lord only knows how they heck they screw them up. But my 2 personal systems have been running XP since 2003 without a hitch! That is what you call stable son, despite having been hit by a few viruses and a few adware issues.

The same goes for the systems I use from work... HW breaks far more often.

XP is the shit.

The problem I am having is the kids systems... they are a bit outdated for fat ass Vista. And quite frankly I am not looking forward to upgrading their shit + the cost of Vista copies...

If Vista is working for you that is all cool and all... I don't need anyone to sell it to me. This is not what this thread is about. I am looking to move avoid it, and that is that...

I didnt mean it had problems every day. I meant that it had problems with staying on for more than about a day. Long uptime on xp causes slowdown issues, even on a fresh install and lord knows ive done a ton of them on many machines. I like xp too dont get me wrong I just get annoyed with people who are so stuck in their ways that they refuse to try new stuff and will take anyones word that the new stuff is crap. I know people still running 2000 because they think xp is crap.

Im not saying your one of the people I describe, just pointing out the general attitude.

For the most part if it works I don't fix it. My days of reinstalling diff OS are long over... the shit took too much of my time...

I have 2 PC running Ubuntu Studio 8.10 on my kids PC... if they don't break that... I FOUND THE MOFUGGING GOLD MINE!!!!

I like XP over Vista only because Vista will try to protect or help you right into the grave. I don't care who's profile some local data exists under, if I am an adminstrator I want access to the entire file system, I don't want to have to jump through hoops to go a specific path to a file otherwise it protects me away from it. Then add in the horrible search performance on Vista, the little issues that you get used to after a while like menu changes, no context menus where there used to be, UAT prompts popping up all the time, etc. It just becomes a headache, but one you can eventually get used to once you learn the tricks to get around the little annoyances.

Never tried a Unix or Linex system since college. Don't find many of them in corporate environments.

why would you ever have to upgrade from XP?

I sure as hell don't plan on it. hell I have a laptop I use for my car that still has 98 on it. I see no reason to upgrade any of it.

I'm setting up a laptop that is currently running Vista to run NIX. I haven't completely decided if I want to go Linux or go BSD. I'm stuck on the fence about it. If I go Linux, it'll probably run Mandrake/Mandriva, Slackware, or SuSE. If BSD, I'll run Dragonfly or Open. Obviously, I've got some thinking to do.

I know the ins and outs about XP and I really want to try something new to learn and hopefully deal with some challenges. :] I've been into Unix for a while and haven't had the system to convert.
I don't know a lot of people who run any Unix-based os and that's a shame.

Oh and holy shit referring to Windows 98. Didn't even upgrade to ME? hahaha
