Anyone ever use anything like this for summer riding?
A buddy of mine (who's armor crew currently in Iraq) recently told me about these. I guess some of the guys rotating in to replace them have these, and swear by them.
Texas Cool Vest
Basically its a vest that uses special cold packs that stay right at 65 degrees as they undergo a phase change. The effect lasts for about 2 hours worn under body armor in Iraq, and should last much longer here. The packs are recharged by throwing them in a cooler full of ice water for 20 minutes or a fridge for about an hour.
Seems like an ideal solution for summer riding, Im just curious if anyones ever tried anything like this.

Yeah, we have those things at my job, and they really arent that great. They are a great idea, but they didnt really impress anyone at work and the first time we used them was the last time we used them.
squid it if youre hot during summer time.
I dunno, 8lbs for the heavy-duty model (rated for 2.5 hours at 125 degrees ambient) seems like a small price to pay to travel both safely and more comfortably. From what my buddy was saying, the closer these are worn to the skin the more effective they are, so Im thinking Tshirt > Cooling Vest > Jacket should work OK.
By the way, theyve got lightweight ones that get down to the 4-5lb range.

This looks like a great idea... but I would want to try one out before dishing out $160 for something I don't really know works. The concept seems sound if it really stays at 65 degrees for 2 hours.
Why didn't you like them when you used them at work JH26? Just too bulky? Did it not really keep you cool? Did it wear off too fast?
The weight thing seems to be a non issue in my mind, hell I bet my jacket, boots, etc. are just as heavy as this thing. I book marked the website. Good find! I have been looking for a better way to gear up and stay cool ever since I started riding. This may be the best suggestion I have come across so far as it is not gearing down, but providing "air conditioning" under the gear.
