There is one more important thing to add besides checking your mirrors, and not stopping in the middle of the lane.
Always Keep your bike in gear! I always hear that clunk to first nearly everytime I see some biker at a light. Be ready to react!

That's hard to do sometimes. I never really keep it in gear, (yea I know...) cuz it's too hard to keep the clutch in that long. Plus, it's not that good for it to be held in that long. You'll mess up the throwout bearing eventually, I've heard.
