time for a bike
Hey guys I need some info. here's the deal. I'm 18 years old. I really want a bike. I've been racing motocross all my life (I know a dirtbike is alot different than a streetbike). I have a truck right now and Im sick of paying 95 bucks to fill it up I'm only wokring part time at sweetbay so im not exactly wealthy after filling up once a week plus the fees of keeping piece running...fords haha
. Anyways Im ready for a nice bike for the street. i want something new like an 06 and up. I really want a R1 lol. When I told the guy at the dealer he laughed...but whatever when I do something I like to go big. What do you guys think I should do for a first bike. I want a fast bike r1 or gixxer 1000 but im not gonna be haulin ass all the time i just love the bike. the one i sat on seamed pretty damn big though. Im about 6 foot and weigh 180. I dont want to get a "starter" bike and end up being bored with it after a couple months. I can handle the power of a big bike and ive known several people that have died or been seriously injured on bikes including my dad and cousin. What do you guys think? thanks

1) Tires... if you're going to go for the long life tires you will be sacrificing grip. And if you only commute on the bike with sport tires the going average is about 5k miles per set. The going average for the good rubber is about $300 installed. I go through a set in 6-8 months of just riding on weekends... and you are going to commute??? I've looked at quality long life rubber and due to the fact that those rarely sell on Sport Bikes they are more expensive.
2) On average, the daily commuter puts about 15k miles a year on their cars. If by any chance you approach that mark on a bike, you'll have to consider checking your valves. It is a recommended maintenance item that I wouldn't ignore specially if you buy new... that service alone isn't cheap... call around or ask your dealer's maintenance dept what that costs...
3) Depending on your use, the sprockets and chain are wear items to keep an eye on as well. It needs to be cleaned & lubed, and it is recommended that it be done after each use to prolong its life. A set of chain & Sprockets is anywhere from $150-200
4) You'll want to get insurance... if you don't want it and you plan on riding in the city, you might as well give me the money. The risk you run of riding in the city on a daily basis warrants that you consider insurance, or you'll hate when the thing a) gets stolen, b) gets hit in a parking lot or c) you get into an accident (God Fobid).
All those things should easily exceed the amount you spend to on your truck to move around.
Sure it's ez to give advice than take it... you'll do what you want regardless... but trust me... you will not save a dime in the long run... I haven't even gone into the cost of gear, which you should get.
In case you think its cool to ride around town wiht no gear, sunglasses & a lid strapped to the side of the bike.. think again... those guys are posers, hoping looking like a dumbass will get them some poonany...

yea and trust me if you get bored on a 600 you need to learn how to ride.I have 2 bikes and they are both 1k's, i want another 600 imo they are just as fun, if not funner.dont think your gonna get a 600 and "grow out of it" 2 months later.take it frome someone who has ridden them all 600's especially the new ones are not to be underestimated.
