Default Anyone with experience with a cbr 600

A friend of mine just bought a 96 cbr 600 f2 and he asked me to come by and check it out. First thing I saw was that its an old race bike. Everything had safety wire holes drilled. Well the bike ran great for about four hours and I got a call saying that it wont start. I go over and check it out for a few min(I was on my way to work) Its turning over fine and getting gas (didnt have time to check for spark) but it will not start. I have heard that the voltage regulators on these bikes go out quite often. I have very little electrical experince with bikes. Is there any way to check this? And where is it located (never worked on one of these before). Thanks for any help.

The RR is located under the rear tail of the bike, usualy on the left side. It can simply be checked at first with a voltage meter. I dont remember the exact specs but measure the voltage at idle, then over 5k, if they are all greatere then 13 but less then 14.6 then you should be ok and everythings charging. If it is turning over fine then its more in likely not the RR. When the RR quits it either sticks open or closed. Open it will not charge the system at all and your voltage will contiunely drop, if its stuck closed it will just keep building up more voltage and start frying the electrical system. Id simply check the grounds and make sure everything is straight there.

What about a stator? What exactly does that do and is there a way to test that? Thanks for the reply.

The stator is similar to an alternator on a car, it will have 3 large yellow usualy wires coming out of it. You can do a resistance check between them to see if its shorted to ground which means its toasted. If the system is charging then the stator and RR is fine.

If it was my bike, id ask this, in the time it was riden did it seem to run correctly. Did it start to loose power or stumble before it stoped running? You can also do a resistance check across the positive and negative pole on the coil packs and the spark plug wire. There is a lot of testing you can do. If the bike sat for a long time its possible that the carbs had sediment in them and slowly or ubruptly cloged the jets. Do a search for a shop manual for the bike. If you cant find one by morning I should be able to find one for you. That will give better specificats then i am able to give.

i believe the RR is located on the right side of the tail and each plug has it's own coil . i have found if one is bad it will bearly start and run like shit but is 2 or more are bad it will do nothing but turn over and flood.

Thanks for the replies. When I was over there I tried starting fluid right to the carbs and it still did nothing but turn over. I am thinking it might be the cdi box or the coil/coils like you suggested. when I get some time I will try to go back over and help him out. I will let you guys know what i find.
