Default Hillsborough County ranks second in crashes, only behind Miami's Dade County

There's no way around it.

At least according to doctors. With no seat belts and no surrounding reinforcements, anyone involved in a motorcycle crash is going to have their head and skin hit pavement. And emergency room physicians are seeing more of these type of crashes.

In fact, statistics from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles show that motorcycle crashes are rising. The last time there wasn't a yearly increase in Florida motorcycle crashes was from 1997 to 1998.

And Hillsborough County ranks second in crashes, only behind Miami's Dade County.

"If they wear a helmet, great,'' said Dr. Carlos Smith, who works in the ER at St. Joseph's Hospital. "If they wear protective gear, that's great, but it only goes so far, so they experience a lot of pain and a lot of suffering."
More Information

John Dunn knows that all too well.

A motorcycle crash survivor, Dunn's accident left him with a limp after needing four surgeries for extensive injuries.

"A car came and t-boned me basically and I was doing about 40 mph,'' he said. "Knocked me into the oncoming lane of traffic, I was lucky that nobody was coming."

In 2007, 60 motorcycle crash victims have been cared for in the St. Joseph Hospital emergency rooms. Dunn said he misses his motorcycle but not the danger of being in another crash.

"Whether I get back on a bike or not, I haven't decided that just yet,'' Dunn said. "But I do miss it.''

Tell you what, Ive actually run interferance for bikes being harassed by assholes before. If you ever see a big cro-magnum looking dude in a white 350z start fucking with whoever was messing with you, thats me.

Ive got zero tolerance for that shit. I dont have a bike (yet) but I know a lot of people who ride and nothing pissed me off more than cars (and especially SUV's) harassing bikes.

Besides, my insurance on the Z is phenomenal. Your helmet & jacket sadly dont offer the same protection as six airbags and one of the best crash safety ratings ever acheived by a sports car.

and its a nissan ...

just this past weekend my friend was getting on 275 with me driving behind him and a cop wouldnt let him over...can you believe that BS? and then a mazda 626 basically rode his ass for like a mile before finally just getting in the next lane...

people can be real assholes...they dont fuckin realize how dangerous they are while driving a 4 wheeled 2500LB+ machine when someone is on a 500lb 2 wheeled machine

yea that was me, had to take it to like 12,000 to get in front of the asshole (he had 2 cars behind him, all riding ass, a friggin cock train fest). the guy in the fuggin 626 was the best tho, i sat up and turned around on my left side (right hand still on the throttle) and with my left arm i did the "what the fuck asshole?" motion.

well guys ride safe.I learn the more I ride the more close calls I have.I ride an average 1k + miles everymonth cause I am addicted to riding.I have multiple run ins daily.

Here is a good one.Sat night I left the lot solo so I would be a good boy lol and I had lil sideshow on the back.Just past ccc a black suburban merged fast on me in my lane while a cop was following me.I locked the rear up cause I knew the pig would get me if I goosed it around him.The cop almost smashes me and does nothing, but follow me another 20 miles.I wanted to kill that cop since he didn't care some wreckless idiot almost killed me

so ya be safe guys

^ Lol!

I read this article as well. It's disturbing, but it always works both ways. Sometimes the rider's fault, sometime's it's other people. Regardless, it's dangerous and can happen to anyone at anytime. All you can do is put on your gear, be aware, don't be stupid and hope u make it home. It's a dangerous hobby and most of us are very aware of that. (Most... keyword)
