Default Regulator/Rectifier

When you're riding your motorcycle and the headlight/gauges suddenly dim and the bike starts sputtering like it's running out of gas, then the headlight/gauges get super bright, then dim again, is that the regulator/rectifier going bad?

I tore into the bike trying to find a problem...everything looked fine except for a loose negative power cable at the battery post. Could a loose cable simulate a bad regulator like that?

I just replaced my rectifier, and yes this is what it sounds like. It may be sending too much sometimes and not enough others. My bf's headlight blew when his was going bad. *Jumping the bike, or charging the battery with it connected to the bike can cause it to go bad*
