Question Nitrogen in tires..

Alot of shops now are doing nitrogen in car tires.

Will they be any benefit for our bike tires or a hazzard?

I havent done any research yet.But i was talking to a guy who came to my job on a mobile semi truck tire changer.

He told me that it has less condensation.
The tire pressure does not change with hotter tire temps.

I heard tire plus (Don Olsen) charges like $4. per tire.BUT they do not dismount its basically release old air and refill.

So what do you think?

i think its stupid, they have been doing it for a while, and i've had people try to convince me that they got better gas mileage and tire wear and yadda yadda yadda from it...save yourself 20 bucks, and check your tire pressure every time you ride, like you are supposed to do anyways.

Its on my car, it did improve gas mileage (+1.5 miles per gallon), lol

Seriously, I don't know where they like 2133543532 miles per gallon.

We have it here at work however, its free if you own a Honda. Or if service is done at Autoway HOnda.

Have not thought about it doing it on my bike. If your in the area, hit me up, I'll see if I can squeeze you in for free.

It's lighter, barely, which doesn't matter unless your some F1 team, haha. It doesn't hold moisture like oxygen does so that's why road race teams like it. I think it doesn't seep though the rubber as much as oxygen? So, you can be more lazy and check the tire pressure less often, but if you do top off the tires... well, not everyone has a nitrogen air tank at their house.

If it removes at least 1lbs of unsprung weight in the wheels\tires... that's a cheap $8 mod...

BertO id like to take you up on that offer.

BUT I want to make sure its safe.
Bike tires dont have steel belts (am I correct) So how will it affect a bike tire?

Is this the same thing they put in air plane tires?
Cause If I remember correctly. The spark from aluminum wheels(curb check),with the nitro causes a small explosion.

Im tring to get my tires mounted on my bike within the next 2 weeks.

Id liek to try this.Bert, what do you think about filling it with air, then you letting the air out.

Does the tire need to be dismounted to make sure no condensation is inside?

NItrogen makes up 78% of the air you are breathing right now. It is not explosive, although you can still have a blow out. The molecules are larger than air molecules so therefor they seep through the permeable rubber at a slower rate, and the nitrogen is dry, and does not condensate or expand like compressed air does when it heats up. It can also be mixed with regular compressed air if you have a leak, or pressure is low with no consequences. I run nitrogen in my truck tires since I have chrome rims and it the dryness prevents corrosion, Its not a MUST have, but it does have its benifits so i say get it if u have the extra money and time, but i couldnt tell a performance difference when i switched in my truck, but im looking to do the same with my bike. And no u dont need to dismount the tires, you can drain the air out, and then fill with nitrogen, I also use nitrogen in my AIR suspension system, and my paintball gun.
