Dan is still improving, although ever so slightly. He probably has several more days to spend in the ICU. He's still on a ventilator because his lungs are very bruised. His head trauma will heal, and the job for today was wiggling his fingers and toes, which he was able to do. They had barely given him any pain medication today and they asked him to shake his head if he hurt and he shook his head no. (This is a kid who was kicked in the face during soccer and broke his jaw in 3 places and didn't take a single pain med)...

His face has more color today, but his feet/arms/hands are swollen. His heart rate is still high, his temperature is high, he still is requiring plasma as well as RBC's. They were doing a kidney ultrasound tonight, and he is scheduled for surgery again tomorrow at 1pm. They will know more about his internal bleeding situation once that occurs. He will be in good hands tomorrow! Three trauma surgeons, kidney specialist, pulmonologist, the surgeon who did the surgery on saturday, as well as a few other various people.

The word is he will make it as long as some unforseen complication doesn't occur. They even had an infection specialist in there today due to his elevated temperature asking me questions about the accident and other parts of his life just before the accident. I spent about 2 hours in the ICU today with his parents, dropped off a few cards and a balloon. Two girls from work showed up and they stood outside his room for a minute or two, but were too shook up to touch him or anything.

Edit: After looking at that picture again, I realized you weren't referring to me, but the one inbetween Dan and I off in the distance, who did crash and damage his bike enough that he couldn't ride it home.

We came over the hill to the 2nd s-turn on the return trip home and didn't know it was there (note that there is NO sign!), I started braking, realized I hadn't broke enough and made the choice to go off the road. I rode into the grass, turned around, and jason (most left person in the picture) went off to the left of me, hit a pile of rocks going probably about 10-15mph and his bike just slipped out from under him throwing him to the ground. Then the next 2 bikes, practically at the same time come into the grass to the my right and go down. I didn't see what specifically happened with those last 2 bikes, only parts, like bikes tumbling, plastic flying...

The 2nd guy, Jason, stated that he made the choice to go offroad, but probably made it later than he should have. The last guy said he target fixated on the bikes going offroad. Whether Dan tried to make the turn, or just followed the first two of us I don't know and probably never will. All I know is that his bike hit the metal post because there was blue fiberglass on it, and there was a big gash in his helmet that caused him to crack his skull.

I'm in no rush to jump back on my bike, or back on those roads. But if/when I do ride, I would go there again just make it more enjoyable this time. Taking less chances = going home.

P.S. Updates on his condition are being posted in the rider down section.

Tried again today and had it out for 30 minutes, but his breathing was just way too shallow so they had to intubate and put him back to sleep again.

He has fluid in his lungs and they are going to do a cat scan on his lungs and his head tomorrow and see what they turn up.

Another set back ...but at least things are still progressing.
Prayers continuing...

Why does it take someone almost dying in front of them to finally realize this?
