Default '01 R1 Mods

My nephew has an '01 R1 and is looking to see what might be some good engine mods to do to it. Kind of a street/strip cruiser? He is kicikng around a turbo setup, but the '01 is carbed and that would make it an interesting build. Any ideas on good enigine mods for an '01 R1? how big can you bore one? any good cam set ups? any weak points to an R1 motor, rods crank etc? Thanks,

DogBoneR1 is the man to ask.... that's right up his alley
He'll chime in soon.

Here's what BlueZoomer and DB (both from SC) are doing with his R1:
graves intake cam
graves cam sprockets
valve springs
possible port and polish job
should end up somewhere around 162rwhp

Graves Motor Sports (GMS) makes a kick ass stroker kit for the R1's, but it's big $$$$$. I opted just to bore, not to stroke. As for boring it, you can safely go 3mm over (I only went 2mm to stay on the safe side of safe.). Anything over 1mm bigger, your going to want to get some forged rods. The crank is strong, but could benefit from a balancing. While the motor is apart definatly have the transmition undercut. I had mine done at R&D in Pinellas. With the R1 having 3 intake valves per cyl. porting will get you the biggest gains. I gained 14hp alone, by just porting and polishing with a high compression head gasket. If you can get you hands on at set of R7 valves have them cut it. 1mm bigger but still lighter then stock. GMS also makes a great intake cam. Makes the best power at 112deg. Leave the exhaust cam stock but adjust to 110deg. GMS recommends getting Valve springs which they sell as well. Other then that, clean up the inside of the cases. Outside of the motor, get a QB Carbon ram air box, BMC air filter, and a good exhaust. I wouldnt recommend getting flat slides carbs. I rode an R1 with them and it just makes the ride so unrefined with little gains.

If you need anything else let me know.

thanks man, I'll pass it on. Tried to get him to log on here, hopefully he will. He is in Deltona (near Orlando). He wants to do as much work as possible himself. I steered him towards a few companies to do the "machining" portion. R&D is the shit when iut comes to trannied, have a procut ttranny by them in my dragbike. Thanks again DB and probably will holler again at ya as he starts working on it.

sorry blub, never ridden a crusier, don't see the point in riding something that weighs as much as a car and has the horsepower of a moped. crotchcrockets is where it is at for this old man.....

Hey all, im the nephew and turbokaw (the old man) is the uncle. Thanks for the info regarding the bike im still up in the air as to what i want to do with it as i am in no rush. Im working with what is almost an unlimited budget seeing as though im not putting a time limit on it, just want to take my time and do it all right. The motor is already out of the bike and the thinking process as to where i want to start is under way, i am planning a complete overhaul of the bike itself seeing as though it was wrecked and basically totaled once, and never took the greatest care of it with it being out in the weather all the time and never under cover. Not all my fault we dont have a garage or anything of the sort here so its always parked out front right under my window. But as the screen name says boosted? because i know its possible to be done just dont know the difficulty level, basically the two cars before the bike were both turbo and i kinda miss the pull it gives you when you accelerate. I mean dont get me wrong the bike pulls plenty fine but after 2 years and 25k miles you kind of want to go up and i love the yami to much to make a hayabusa appear in its place. to hp pretty much, that and I want to be able to have something that makes people go "wow thats a nice bike" and know i did it with my buddy in a garage.

In my opinion if you want to Turbo it, use an 02/03 motor. It will bolt in. You just need the harness, ecu and throttle bodies.

Yeah the thought has run through my head many times to do so, Its just theres a few of those running around. Not here necessarily but you get my drift. I just want to go for something different and if it seems like it may be too hard to accomplish, then i may just go for an all motor setup. My goal generally was about 200rwhp didnt want to set the bar ridiculously high because if you dont get it, its more disappointment then it is joy. Thanks for the info so far though and anymore down the road, it is much appreciated.
