Default Bike week 2006 deadliest since the event began

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (AP)—Bike Week 2006 is the deadliest since the event began 65 years ago, with 18 motorcyclists dying in eight days.

Florida Highway Patrol Spokeswoman Trooper Kim Miller says this year's deaths surpass the 15 deaths recorded in 2000, previously the most deadly Bike Week on record.

Authorities attribute the spike in deaths to the sunny weather, which caused a rise in Bike Week attendance. FHP says the number of alcohol related deaths dipped this year, and helmet use was up.

On Saturday, authorities say Richard Highsmith of Orlando died in Seminole County after returning home from Bike Week. Brian Rooke of West Palm Beach died after hitting a guardrail. And another biker, whose identity has not been released, died in Ormond Beach.

On Friday, Walter Fliss of St. Cloud had just bought his motorcycle when he crashed into a construction site and died. Jason Perron of Apopka, David Hudson of Lake Wales and another unidentified biker also died that night.

Bike Week, which brings thousands of bikers from around the country to Daytona, ended Sunday. Eight motorcycle-related deaths were reported during last year's event.
The following was reported AFTER the top one.......
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The record-high death toll from this year's Bike Week festival in Daytona Beach is now at 20.

Another hospitalized motorcyclist involved in a crash has died. Jerry Bolding of Fountain, South Carolina, was hurt March ninth when his bike hit the back of another motorcycle slowing for traffic. Bolding flew from the motorcycle and hit his head on the pavement. He died Tuesday at the hospital.

The previously reported total of 18 deaths also did not include Richard Germain of New Hampshire, who was run over by another motorcyclist after crossing a double line to pass a truck.

Florida Highway Patrol trooper Kim Miller says sunny weather and scattered biker venues put more riders on faster highways and in more dangerous spots.

The 20 fatalities may rank as one of the highest ever nationwide for a city's bike week. In Sturgis, South Dakota, the worst year was 2004, when 13 riders died. In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a back-to-back Harley rally and Black Bike Week saw its highest total in 2003, when 13 people died.

damn... thats worse than going to the stunt thing a lakeland drag strip...

its pretty crazy that they have less deaths at the sun and fun fly ins where you have more than a 100 70+year old guys flying into one little air port..

but i would also like to see the number of car crashes for those same days for a big city.
