Default Helmets vs Seat Belts

I REALLY don't understand why they can force people to wear seatbelts but not to wear helmets in our state. To me, it's ridiculous. I say everyone should be required to wear them, just as everyone is required to wear seat belts. Just wondering what everyone elses take on it is.

My opinion goes a little something like this.

It's your life, wear the helmet/seat belt at your own risk.

I wear my helmet ALL the time. With the exception of going to the beach or something, because I don't hit over 7mph in stop and go traffic, I see no reason to wear a helmet. That's really the only exception for a helmet. As for my car, it's a habit, I always wear my seat belt, but I dont necessarily believe that it should be an enforced law.

I hate driving down 75 or something and I see some squid with a cool pair of shades hauling ass, thinking he is big daddy baller or some shit.

its a freedom thing...up until the point that the state loses funding for roadwork, and traffic complication solutions, because of all the deaths. I've known people to wreck 100+ and not get a scratch, then there's those freak accidents...I say it's right the way it is now...you're sitting in your car, and the seat belt is there... Some places you go don't "Require" a helmet, but if i leave my house on my bike, i wear my helmet. It just doesn't make sense to not wear seatbelts/helmets...unless you have absolutely nothing to live for.

[EDIT] I've seen what a shocking traffic related death can do to a family...and thats what makes me wear it...i couldn't put my family through that hell.

I think you guys are somewhat missing the point of the thread. Of course it's your FREEDOM to wear your helmet. You don't have the freedom (by law) to NOT wear your seatbelt. If you don't wear your seat belt, then you get a ticket. idk, just weird to me.

the difference is because a lot of bikers petitioned and won to have the helmet law removed. does it make sense? no.

and to the point of not wearing seatbelts and helmets being a freedom. when the state has to pick up the tabs for all the people that get into wrecks and get seriously injured and can't pay their medical bills, the idea of freedom doesn't work. remember, it's a PRIVELIDGE to drive on public roads, not a freedom. if you want to be free, you're free to build your own track and race around on it butt-naked.

true, I recall that many if not the majority of law makers are owners of motorcycle, more specifically cruiser type of bikes. So they pass laws how they want to ride.

One of the consequences of such notions as "entitlements" is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.”
