possibly picking up an R-6
it's a decent deal that's why i'm even considering a 600, the thing is it needs a trans or at least a rebuild. second gear is shot. how much should i expect to pay to fix this?

Just buy the full gear set from ebay and toss that in the bike. I'me guessing you're looking into a 2000-2002? Double check me on this but i think you can drop in the gears from a 2003-2005. If so i would go that route. Should spend about 200-300 on the gears, if that much. Or you can just buy the whole car kit for a few hundred more and use the old engine as a spare. Swapping the whole motor shouldn't be hard at all.

If your mechanically inclined do it yourself. It's really not that hard, just buy a manual, and it will tell you what you need to know. If your not don't do it yourself, you may cause more problems than it's worth. My .02

Yes, the engine and tranny are all encased together. Its just up to the person to choose what they want to do. Most of that would depend on the deals they can find. I am only guessing(based on past auctions i've seen) that the tranny set can be bought for 100-300 bucks. That all depends on the type of bike its for. Some people may want to save a few hundred and do the gear swap themselves. While on the other hand engine kits range from 500-1500...depending on bike, year, milage. So if someone gets a good deal on an engine they know is good, then it may be worth the few extra hundred dollars. The benifit of going with the engine swap is that its less time consuming and there should be less to screw up. The engine has to come out of the bike either way. So one could R&R an engine in a few hours where the gear set would require a semi tear down of the engine which may take a bit longer. Its obviously more involved though. Then again, you never know what some people are willing to do to save a few bucks. Its just good sense to consider all ones options.
