Biking deaths should provoke compassion Series
Re: Educating motorcyclists can promote safe, fun rides
Because screaming in outrage over people passing judgment on others when they are unaware of the situation will accomplish nothing, my only recourse is to put it in words.
No one should drink alcohol and drive whether in a car, on a motorcycle, a riding lawn mower, or a bicycle. No smart person drinks and drives and I do not need to read any study from any university to figure that one out. Secondly, Florida driving laws require you to pass a motorcycle safety course to drive a motorcycle legally here.
As for the helmet issue, a young man who died that night was someone I loved very much. Justin Feagles had a helmet on, he was not speeding, there was no alcohol or drugs involved on his part. One police officer had to tell two people I deeply love, that their eldest son, their loving and kind boy, who was turning into a very fine young man, had no chance. His life was instantly taken because of a careless decision.
I witnessed a very scared, hurt, young lady try to carry on knowing the man she was going to marry, the father of her two precious sons would not be able to be there with her to watch them grow up, because of a decision made by someone else. I saw a young lady and a young man bury the brother they loved with all their being, because of someone else's actions.
There is enough heartache and pain in this community over that tragic night. Why don't we try to direct our energies toward compassion and sympathy for all involved and spend less time assigning blame and passing judgment.

Re: Common sense can save bikers' lives, May 4 editorial
I think you are sending a message to the wrong drivers. It was my son that lost his life. He did not lose it due to not having common sense. My son could handle his bike better then most people can handle a car. He was obeying all traffic laws and was wearing the required safety equipment. He was on his way home to his babies.
It was a car that hit him. It's the drivers of cars that need common sense. If people would just look, they would see us. Most motorcycle drivers take an intense safety course to receive their license. Maybe drivers of cars should start doing the same.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

It really is WAY too easy to get a drivers' license in the state of Florida. I doubt the laws will be changing anytime soon, so anybody on two-wheels is at an instant disadvantage. I guess ya gotta stay alert and ride with lady luck, huh?
Thank you for this thread.

this is all completely true except for the person that wrote the first statement. he was not doing anything wrong. and wearing the gear.
like i have said before it is far too easy to get a car liscence and in another tread i posted what i witnessed in two seperate elderly people being help to pass a seeing test to get the liscence. they odviously were not able to operate the vechile correctly.

but i also disagree with the person that responds by saying that, "Most motorcycle drivers take an intense safety course to receive their license". unfortunately, i know way too many people that have no motorcycle endorsement. kind of scares me when i start riding around other bikes i don't know.
