Motorcycle exhaust questions
OK, bear with me, this is a little wierd...
I've been wanting to fab up a different exhaust manifold for my car, which has a 2.3 turbo Ford. Finding materials is a PITA since I'm in Ft. Myers, but I noticed on my Boss's R1 that the primary pipes would probably work out really well to start with. Stock take-offs are pretty cheap, too.
What I need to know is this:
-What types of bikes use what type of material? I know GSX-Rs use titanium, which I can't work with now. Who uses stainless, or mild steel?
-What is the wall thickness of the pipes? Are they really thin to keep weight down? I'm sure it varies, but a ballpark figure would be great.
-Is there any place online that would have info about this kind of stuff? I've been searching about this stuff for a while, but none of it is really in-depth technical.
Thanks,
-Mike

Im not sure if the piping diameter from a motorcycle manifold is big enough for your app but I
. Most are made of stainless I presume. Why not just go to www.JGSTOOLS.com And order what you need? They have mild steel with pretty thick walls so should be easy to work with. Thats another thing, I am gonna say that the wall thickness on a motorcycle manifold is too thin and wont support a 25lb turbo hanging off of it plus I dont think it will flow that well seeing as you have a 2300cc engine and there arent any I-4 motorcycle engines that big. Just some things to ponder cause Im not really sure.

OK, this is pretty much confirming what I thought. The thing to keep in mind about the tube sizing is that the bikes spin up to, what...11,000 RPM? I guess they need to use big pipes for that. I was pretty surprised when I saw the size of the exhaust on BIKES. The primaries are definately large enough for the stock 2.3 stuff (which might say something about the 2.3...)
THanks!
