Default Suzuki GS 500?

I'm looking in to getting a bike pretty soon and I've been doing a little shopping. This is going to be my 1st bike so I don't want something that's going to fly out from underneath me. Would a Suzuki GS 500 be a good bike for me to start off with if I have some minor riding experience (riding my dad's old Honda Shadow LOL)? Thanks for your help fellas!

I don't see why not. I've been looking into getting an 05 for my first bike.

Just about any 500 would be a good starter bike. If this is going to be your first bike and you plan on upgrading after you get comfortable riding I would definately recommend getting a used bike whatever you get.
