I use the Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket all the time. I even went down wearing one and it did it's job!!

Get a good set of leather gloves, Frame sliders for the bike, a good leather jacket for the winter, a mesh style jacket for the summer, good riding boots like the Icons, and a new set of steel balls!!!

One of the instructors at my MSF class said that some magazine or something did a test of three different types of jackets. They dragged em down a street i guess, and supposedly the leather one came apart well before the mesh ones. I have a mesh/rocktex one. It has all kinds of armor and isn't as hot as the leathers. Mesh is a must down here, it's so damn hot and humid. I also recommend the Alpinestars SMX Air Carbon gloves. They are lightweight, breath awesome, and look badass. They are priced decently at around $55. Well worth it. You can actually feel the air coming through the leather and blowing on your fingers...very nice.

Cool, good info guys... I got a Joe Rocket Pheonix jacket with the bike that fit's me about perfect. Still need to get some gloves so I don't have to borrow them. Helmet that came with the bike will do for learning, but I'll definately get something nicer. The Shoei RF-1000 seems to fit me great so I'll probably look for one online.

there are alot of shops locally that will take care of you. You can go see Eric @ RTM on Florida north of Fletcher.
Billy @ Barneys of brandon will take care of you. Like everyone else said go into the shops and try stuff on so you know what fits. These were some good sites.

Leather is the best.

People have taken falls with the JR Phoenix, and the jacket melted onto their skin. If you've taken a fall with it and it worked, awesome, I'm going to stay away from it.

Be wary of "great" deals on ebay. There're some amazing deals on Arai helmets, except they're fakes and they are exact matches, just sometimes they don't have the snell sticker (still have all the decals and DOT ... stickers).

When you're considering gear, ask yourself what you would like to wear if you were to jump out of a car at 70 mph.
