Default "Newbie" Looking for advice/Opinions

After much thinking i have decided to get a bike. I have been looking at 600's the Katana more specifically. What doesn everyone think of them as Starter bikes? should i go smaller and work the way up? my budget is under 7k.

Any advice would be great, Thx.

I personally wouldn't want a bike as my "primary" transportation. It will really suck during the summer/fall when it rains every afternoon.

I still have access to a car, i would just choose the bike over the car.

I see. In that case, I agree.

well i wouldn't reccomend having it as your primary transportation. But it's good to see that you want to start out on a katana, they are awesome bikes to learn on. You should look into getting a used one you can probably find some awesome deals on a 00 and up.

Motorsports of Tampa on NFA has 2 used ones, both 600's 1 is 00 with a few thousand miles on it for $4500 and the other is a 03 with only a few hundred for 5500, the rep said both bikes are clean (meaning they both are running right) but they have been down. just minor cosmetic dmg. thos prices sound right from a dealer?

Check out our forsale forum. There is a guy selling a Katana in there, I'm sure you can talk him down a bit. We also have another member who has a Katana that he is thinking about selling.

Wow, I think this is the first reasonable decision made by a new rider. Im so used to..."Im thinking about a brand new Busa for my first bike, whaddaya guys think?"

I think a katana is an excellent first bike.
It was my first.
1997 Katana 600. It was only $2700, and it was a great bike to learn on.

However, I would like to throw this out there...

If you are at the least bit well coordinated and/or if your are on the larger size/weight (towards 200 lbs, taller than 6 foot)....I think you may be better off getting something alittle more aggressive or something with more power....

Like a used R6, GSXR-600, ZX-6, SV650, or CBR-F4.

But, if you think that you may feel at the slight bit squidy or awkard on a bike...the katana is an excellent first bike due to its forgiving handling characteristics.

The Katana 600 would be a perfect bike. THe insurance on them is half that of the "R" models, and you can still get 02' models new in the crate.
