Default Ive been thinking...

Ive kind of been thinking about purchasing a bike. I know absolutley jack about them or if im even for sure on getting one. Basically I was wondering what bike youd recommend for a first time rider and how I should go about learning to ride. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

this had been beated for awhile.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
beginner.bikes = Dual purpose on/off road enduros like XL250, DR250/350. Kawasaki: EX500 (aka ninja 500R), EX250, Ninja ZX600E (NOT ZX6 or ZX6R). Suzuki: GS500E, SV650, Bandit 400/600, Yamaha: FZR400, Radian, XJ600 Seca II. Honda: Interceptor VF500, Hawk GT650. Buy used for first bike, and insure for minimum - chances are you will dump it. nothing over a 600cc for a beginner. u can take classes to learn to ride or find someone that has been riding for a real long time and have them teach you. don't go too expensive w/ ur bike b/c like gixxer said, chances are you will lay it down.

i wouldn't suggest a dirtbike, but some bike that's cheap and not a heavy motor. eventually make ur way up. i laid my bike down and haven't riden for a good whle now and i'm getting a 600 now and eventually going back up to a 900 or 1100

I agree with TotalEclipse on this one 100%, except i'd say dual purpose instead of dirtbike, that way you can ride it legally on the streets as well...

It all really depends on the person's riding skill level...and also the person's coordination.

My first bike was a 1997 Katana 600cc. I had never riden before...not even a dirt bike. But I got comfortable on the bike quickly. 2 months later I got a 2000 GSXR 600, and never downed it once.

Depending on your size and coordination skills on a bike...I would get a used (1992-1997), medium CC (500-600) bike that is inexpensive (no more than $4k).

BTW, I dropped my Katana in the drive way and parking lots a couple of times, so dont get something you would cry over dropping as a first bike.

mike.
