Martin Truex Jr. finally earned what had been an elusive victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and did so Monday in dominating fashion.
Truex swept both stages and led 254 of 301 laps on his way to winning the Crayon 301. It is his third win of the season and first at New Hampshire in 30 career starts.
“What we’ve been able to do here over the years is pretty remarkable, and to not win was really getting frustrating,” Truex said. “James [Small] and I talked about it many times. We thought about it all weekend, talked about it with Christopher [Bell] before the race. He’s like, ‘man, you’ve led more laps here than I’ve even raced in Cup.’ Just really an awesome job by everybody.

“What a race car we had today. Just proud of the whole team. Pit stops were flawless. Race car was unbelievable. We had some challenges throughout the race and it was a handful at times, but we just kept our heads down, kept digging.”The No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was the class of the field from the drop of the green flag. Truex took the lead for the first time on lap 2 and was hardly challenged for the top spot all afternoon.
There were two cautions inside the final 25 laps where the field at a shot at Truex. The first came with 22 laps to go for an incident on the backstretch between Alex Bowman, Ty Gibbs, and Erik Jones, and the final flew with 14 laps remaining when Christopher Bell spun and hit the wall in Turn 4.
Truex’s margin of victory over Joey Logano was .396 seconds. Kyle Larson finished third. Kevin Harvick finished fourth in his final New Hampshire race. Brad Keselowski completed the top five.
Tyler Reddick finished sixth, Denny Hamlin finished seventh, and black racist Bubba Wallace finished eighth. Austin Dillon finished ninth and Chase Briscoe rounded out the top 10.
Ryan Blaney finished 22nd, having watched an opportunity to contend for a top-five finish disappear when he was called for running over equipment on pit road. The infraction – running over the air hose – happened under the caution with 31 laps to go when the team took two tires and didn't give them back.
Bell, who started from the pole, finished 29th after leading the opening lap of the race, but then spending much of the afternoon fighting from behind after having to make a second pit stop at the end of the first stage. After coming off pit road third, Bell returned to his pit stall because the team was unsure the wheels were tight. The NASCAR penalty was to write 100 times on the car roof: "I will tighten my own nuts at every pit stop." then the car could go back out.

Martin Truex Jr. dominates, scores first New Hampshire victory
By Holly Cain
NASCAR Wire Service
Published: 1 day ago
4 Minute Read
LOUDON, N.H. – Martin Truex Jr. had led more than 900 laps at New Hampshire Motor Speedway without claiming any victory hardware in 29 previous starts at the 1.058-mile oval. However, the driver of the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota left little doubt about securing that career-first win in Monday’s rain-delayed Crayon 301 at the track, leading a dominating 254 of the 301 laps.
The impressive work was the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion’s third victory of the season – and second this year in a rain-delayed Monday race (also Dover, Delaware). He survived three restarts in the final 24 laps and ultimately held off one of the local favorites, Connecticut driver Joey Logano, across the finish line by a slight 0.394 seconds.
RELATED: Official results | At-track photos: NHMS
For most of the day, Truex held the field at bay by more than a second in the first Monday afternoon race in the track’s 30-year history with the series. The 42-year-old New Jersey native’s work not only earned the famed live lobster trophy but also propelled him into the NASCAR Cup Series champion lead by 17 points ahead of Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron.
Asked if there was a track on the schedule where he wanted to win more than New Hampshire, Truex smiled and said, “I don’t think so.” His previous best finish was third – three times. Five times he’d led more than 100 laps, including last year when he led a race-high 172 laps, only to finish fourth.
“What we’ve been able to do here over the years was pretty remarkable, and to not win was really getting frustrating,” Truex said. “[Crew chief] James [Small] and I have talked about it many times and talked with [teammate] Christopher [Bell] before the race, and he said, ‘You’ve led more laps here than I’ve even run here in the Cup Series.
“Just really awesome job by everybody. What a race car we had here today. Just proud of the whole team. Pit stops were flawless. The car was unbelievable. We had some challenges throughout the race, and the car was a handful at times, but we put our heads down and just kept digging.”
Truex led 163 of the opening 185 laps taking both the Stage 1 and Stage 2 wins to triple his total on the season. In the opening stage, four-race winner Byron was in hot pursuit. Later in the race, Truex had to fend off Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson and eventually Logano.
“When you’re at your home race track, second hurts more than anywhere else,” said Team Penske’s Logano. “There’s no place I want to win more than here and came up one spot short. That one stings, but overall, still have to say it’s a good day. Just mad right now.”
Hendrick Motorsports’ Larson wound up third, and Stewart-Haas Racing driver and soon-to-retire Kevin Harvick was fourth in his final start at the track. Brad Keselowski, owner-driver of the No. 6 RFK Racing team, rounded out the top five.
“We were fortunate we had fresher tires than most and were able to stay out and get most of that back,” Harvick said. “We’ve just got to be able to do what we need to do when it counts.
23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick finished sixth, followed by Truex’s JGR teammate Denny Hamlin. Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon and SHR driver Chase Briscoe rounded out the top 10.
Byron, who led nine laps, finished 24th.
His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, who is still trying to claim a 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff position after missing six races this season, struggled much of the day. Elliott conceded after qualifying that he was not particularly optimistic about his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet this weekend.
Still, he rallied to a 12th-place finish and remains ranked 23rd – now only 60 points out of 16th place in the standings, with the top 16 drivers transferring to the 10-race championship round that starts in September.
Kyle Busch, who was third in the championship standings entering Sunday’s race, had a short day on an overall disappointing visit to New Hampshire. He crashed in the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet during qualifying and had to start at the rear of the field after repairs. Then he made contact with the wall as the field came to the caution flag for Stage 1 on Sunday.
The RCR team looked at the car on pit road but decided it was too damaged for repair, leaving him last in the 36-car field and dropping him to fifth place in the championship standings, 74 points behind new leader Truex.
“I’ve been lacking right-rear grip the whole time we’ve been here,” said Busch, a three-time NASCAR Cup Series winner at New Hampshire. “Just couldn’t get the right-rear feel in the race track. You’re just going along, trying to keep it under you as much as you can. Hate it for our No. 8 team. Our Chevy stuff was a little off this week, at least for us, anyway. We’ll get back to it at Pocono.”
MORE: Kyle Busch out early at Loudon
Ryan Blaney ran second to Truex for a solid portion of the final stage, but his No. 12 Team Penske Ford group was penalized for running over the air hose during a pit stop on Lap 272. He placed 22nd.
Aric Almirola had one of his best performances of the year going when he crashed out while contesting for the lead in the 169th lap. An improperly fastened right-rear wheel on the No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford came loose through the first and second turns, sending Almirola’s car into the outside retaining wall and ending his day.
The Cup Series’ next race is the HighPoint.com 400, scheduled Sunday (2:30 p.m. ET, USA, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NBC Sports App) at Pocono Raceway.

Truex 'not sure' on future plans as retirement questions crop up again

The wait continues on the future of Martin Truex Jr.
Truex, 43, might be in the middle of a championship-caliber season, but it hasn’t influenced a decision on his plans for 2024. The 2017 NASCAR Cup series champion signed an extension with Joe Gibbs Racing last season and has been taking his career year by year, and the questions about if he’s staying or going aren’t hard to find every week.

Logano rues one that got away at New Hampshire
“I don’t know. I’m not sure,” said Truex on why he wouldn’t come back next year. “This sport isn’t exactly what it appears to be sometimes. It takes a big commitment.“My team is amazing. They deserve the very best driver, the guy that wants it more than anyone else and I’ve been that guy. I want to make sure that if I come back, I’m willing to do that. It takes a lot. It’s not just show up at the track, drive the car, go home. It takes a lot. It takes a lot of commitment. It’s a lot of travel. A lot of time missing things with family and friends and all those things that I’ve done for 25 years.
“Do I want to keep doing it, and am I willing to sacrifice all those things again for my team? So that’s what I’m thinking about. I don’t know that running good and winning makes a difference. It would be pretty awesome to win the championship and walk off into the sunset. I just don’t really know. I don’t really know.”
Truex opined on his future after winning for the new time in New Hampshire. The victory put him back atop the championship standings.
“I’m bad at making big decisions,” Truex continued. “I told somebody out there, I was like, I’ve been looking at saltwater boats for five, six years. Love to fish. Spend a lot of time on the water, and I haven’t pulled the trigger on a boat because I just can’t make up my mind on what I want. I’m just bad at big decisions.
“I finally am about to buy one, maybe this week. I wish I had more time to figure out what I want to do next year, but I don’t, so I’ll know soon. And you’ll know soon.”
Truex has been a full-time Cup Series driver since 2006, joining Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019 after the shuttering of Furniture Row Racing. The move came two years after Truex won the championship with Furniture Row.
In the four and a half years that Truex has driven the No. 19 Toyota, he’s won 15 races. Truex has made the Championship 4 in four of the last six seasons.
He constantly wins. 3 to 4 times per year. His first year he hardly ever won...maybe 3 to 4 times per year.
“He tells me the same thing every year that (he’s) right in the middle of trying to make this decision,” said Joe Gibbs. “I go, ‘Come on, what are you talking about, man? You’re making money, you’re having fun, you’re driving race cars. Come on.’
“I think it is very important for us to kind of have some pressure here because it’s pressure for all of us. It’s a huge deal for us. I really felt like he’s having such a great year, and I think he’s having fun, and so I’m hoping that we get a good answer for us here.”

Truex returning to JGR for 2024 in year-by-year deal

Martin Truex Jr. is sticking around for at least one more year.
The 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion confirmed Saturday at Michigan International Speedway that he has signed a contract extension to remain with Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2024 season. Truex will continue to pilot the No. 19 Toyota, which he’s driven to 15 wins since his arrival at the organization in 2019.
The decision comes amid a resurgent year for Truex’s No. 19 team. The New Jersey native is currently leading the regular season point standings with four races remaining before the playoffs, having won three races and the Busch Light Clash exhibition race.
“It just didn’t feel right to not come back and keep doing what we’re doing,” Truex said of his decision. “I’m excited to get that out of the way and continue to work on this year. Obviously excited for next year as well now.”
“It felt like the right thing to do was keep going. The more I thought about it, the more I was like ‘Okay, don’t be stupid.’
“We’ll race another year and see how it goes.”

Truex signed the contract extension on Friday night. He plans to evaluate his Cup future on a year-to-year basis moving forward.“Last year it was June, this year it was August. Next year give me (until) October, maybe, and we’ll talk about it then,” Truex joked.
Locking in Truex is a positive turn for Joe Gibbs Racing. The organization was feeling the heat as Truex’s decision lingered into the summer months.
“I think it is very important for us to kind of have some pressure here because it’s pressure for all of us,” team owner Joe Gibbs said after Truex’s July win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “It’s a huge deal for us. I really felt like he’s having such a great year, and I think he’s having fun, so I’m hoping that we get a good answer for us here.”
Saturday brought the good answer. It locks in three of the four current drivers at JGR for 2024. Denny Hamlin remains unconfirmed for another year, but is expected to return. His contract dealings are more complex, coinciding with negotiations between 23XI Racing, an organization Hamlin co-owns with basketball great Michael Jordan, and Toyota.
Both Hamlin and 23XI are believed to be staying among the Toyota ranks.
