I haven’t watched NASCAR for years now. Was a huge fan since the early 80’s. It’s simple NASCAR went woke. The “noose” incident was my final straw. Watching the teams parade down the track in some pathetic attempt to virtue signal, when it was obvious what that was, showed me all I needed to know about where nascar was going. Now the Rebel Flag is banned, sending yet another message to their core fans (and their money) that they aren’t wanted. Now it’s celebrating pride month.

Two things not mentioned. #1 The cars. we as fans rooted for our favorite make of car that was built from a car from the maker ( Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac, AMC, Etc.) Now they are all custom made with even the engines being custom. The only thing we relate to is the name of the plastic rapped make believe car. If we wanted that we would go to sprint car or some other custom built race vehicle. What happened to stock cars that teams built from manufactured vehicles that we identify with and the ability to outsmart the other teams by improving upon their car within the rules. #2 The fans that turn in to the race on TV that can not go to all the races all over the country, but still support a team or teams in some way that benifits the teams and the TV ratings. I for one after fifty to sixty years have lost interest in this type of racing. So with that I bid you goodby.

I remember that wreck. I am a former NASCAR fan. What killed it for me was changing the points system to the chase. They took a great bit that was the all-star race and wanted to make it that way each week. What they really did was screw everyone over. At a certain point, lots of fans saw their driver mathematically eliminated by the artificial points adjustments, and gave up watching. That was me too. Now, I watch Formula one and indycar. NASCAR is all about anger and stupidity, and people like black racist Bubba Wallace looking for an excuse to be offended or just being a bully. The evolution of the cars is another issue and I think was inevitable, but the points nonsense is what killed it for me.

I remember as a young teenager when Buddy Baker broke the 200mph barrier in a Dodge Daytona at Talladega. My brother went out and bought the next issue of Stock Car Racing and we read about it weeks after the fact. I even remember in the earlier '60s before the factory aero-car wars when the teams ran regular hardtops and two-door sedans, with engines and transmissions we all recognized from performance cars and their powertrains on the street, with additional sheet metal mods and rollbars and cages and frame gussets and so-forth welded in to help hold them together at 170mph.

That all started to change in '72 when NASCAR dropped their mandate that the teams use factory built cars - stock cars - and switched to allowing the racing teams to build their cars from the ground up. Then began the slow downward slide of true NASCAR racing. Now, it's a disaster. NASCAR is completely gone. It's as phony as a three-dollar bill; it's the show, as Richard Petty has described it as being.

It seems the executives get their focus groups from people who've never torqued a cylinder head down. The drivers all have to look like clean-cut country singers. The idiotic "Chase" is aimed at those with no bonding with "STOCK" CARS, and no attention-span - but who have a craving for pop-culture nonsense. Save the playoffs for the NFL, NHL, and NBA. It doesn't belong in racing.

You are spot on with your analysis. Between their stupid Chase, stage racing, the charter system and now this terrible next gen car, NASCAR has ruined itself. Now NASCAR wants to jump on the diversity and the gay pride bandwagon. Holding a race on the streets of Chicago? I'm through with them. Been a fan since 1967 when my father took me to my first race. Later I built and raced my own cars in the old NASCAR "Winston Weekly Racing Series" for a little over ten years. Screw them, I hate to say it, but I'm done.

When NASCAR decided to get rid of the Rebel flag and decided they were going to be “politically correct” that was the end for me. Political correctness is a disease. When they changed the date for The Southern 500 I knew the end had come. I’ll spend my time at local tracks, they still appreciate their fans.

Thanks Jimmy. You provided a lot of good, inside information, that most people wouldn't have known about. I'm in my 60's and was a die hard NASCAR fan for decades. You nailed it when you said they're in decline because they alienated their core fans. Today, Bud Light is another example of that. I stopped being a fan when I felt they had turned their backs on the very people, their hardcore fans, that had made NASCAR great.

The expense is a huge problem. I used to save up for tickets, now I have to save up just to buy a hat. And its not just tickets and such, things like tools are harder to purchase than they used to be. Everyone has to watch their money a little more these days, and that means very few of these kids grew up with a beater they tried to hot rod, a dad or uncle with a dirt-track car, or really any of the things that originally got us older folks into racing. Combine that with the rule changes and the wokeness and it's no suprise they are losing so many fans.

Old fans were car freaks that were raised in an era of win on Sunday, sell on Monday. Younger generations the amount of car fans dwindled due to mundane vehicles being produced in the 80s among other factors that would take me years to explain. Then you have the loss of Dale, the COT, and the personalities of of the older drivers, like you said fan alienation, whimsical rule changes, and like all society GREED. I think the current situation with every driver call for suspension is going to be what turns me off
