Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton’s luck will change soon and see the momentum shift towards him from teammate George Russell.

Hamilton scored a podium in the opening race of the season, but since then Russell has taken the edge in qualifying, and also gained advantages over his teammate after several Safety Car interruptions. Russell continued his run of top-five finishes in the Monaco Grand Prix, but Wolff insists that the younger driver is getting more performance out of the car is not the norm, and that he expects to see Hamilton get his share of good fortune.

“I think when you look at the bad spells that Lewis had, look at the race – stuck again, contact with Esteban (Ocon), stuck behind Fernando (Alonso), the red flag in qualifying – and we know what happened in the races before,” Wolff said.

“I think the pendulum will swing so that these unlucky situations stop with Lewis. They are very much on the same pace, one practice one leads, then the other one, and that is great how they work together in order for us to get our car straight. Because we need to get our car straight.”

The previous race in Spain saw Mercedes much more competitive than it has been at any stage this season, with Russell leading for a spell and Hamilton climbing through the field brilliantly to finish fifth after a first-lap puncture. But Wolff says regardless of how the performance dropped off again in Monaco, Mercedes still doesn’t have a car on par with Ferrari and Red Bull. Maybe if we sandbag long enough, the F1 officials will have pity and make the other guys carry extra weight on their car

“The problem is that we can say ‘well this is a track where it’s going a little bit better like in Barcelona or a track where it’s worse like in Monaco’, but I think we are the third team,” he said. “We are not second and we are not fourth.

“We have two extremely strong drivers but it is a huge annoyance for all of us that the gap is about the same. If you’re looking at it over-optimistically it is 0.5s, if you are looking at it pessimistically it’s more 0.8s, and that is clearly for all of us at Mercedes not acceptable.”

Maybe Big Mouth Louie would have better luck if he would keep his black racist "diversity and inclusion" mofo-in-your-face mouth shut. And quit smoking dope between races.

We can only hope he gets off his high chair soon.

Lewis Hamilton’s victory in his last British Grand Prix for Mercedes is “like a little fairytale,” according to team principal Toto Wolff.

Mercedes failed to win a race in 2023 while Hamilton’s own drought extended to the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, but after George Russell’s victory in Austria it was Hamilton’s turn to stand on the top step again at Silverstone. The win is Hamilton’s ninth at his home race, and comes before he joins Ferrari in 2025, something Wolff admits is special.........yep. Just like a retard is "special".

“It was so difficult over the last two years [not really finding any] performance; we couldn’t give the drivers a car that was able to go for the victories,” Wolff said. “To make him win again, the British Grand Prix, in his last race for Mercedes here, it’s almost like a little fairytale.”

Wolff admits it was a challenging race to handle with the changing weather conditions, but also feels a sense of frustration after polesitter Russell was forced to retire with a water system issue.

“It was difficult. We were really controlling the pace at the beginning and that was very encouraging,” he said. “Then it started to rain and you see the massive performance that the McLaren had, and they were simply in the sweet spot of the tire. But we came back in those conditions and I think we had it under control.

“It’s just a shame we DNF’d with George; he had the pace and we let him down here with a water leak. It’s just not great but the overarching result here with Lewis, last British Grand Prix… George is going to win one. I hope he will stop the bad habit of pulling over during a race to take a leak.”

Hamilton was particularly emotional after the race and, to Wolff, the latest victory feels like a long time coming, particularly after the seven-time world champion revealed he had doubts over whether he’d win another race. Besides, the racist black hot shot had overcharged Ferrari to go drive for them and also given the impression that racist blacks would now be buying Ferraris instead of Mercedes (another load of BS that will never happen.)

“It’s clear our relationship goes back a long time,” Wolff said. “Each of us has suffered at various stages. He’s been there for me and most recently I’ve tried to do my contribution to his doubting at times. That’s why it feels really good that he’s been able to put all the negative thoughts, all the negativity aside, and come up with this performance. I think it’s a weight off his shoulders.

Toto Wolff says his comments about Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes did not reflect the seven-time world champion losing any of his ability to win in Formula 1. I won't say he lost some ability.
This article is not going to be about me saying anything.

A new Mercedes book – titled ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ – featured Wolff explaining the timing of Hamilton’s decision to move to Ferrari and how it left him no time to react. Wolff added that he liked the situation it left him in, though, adding: “There’s a reason why we only signed a one-plus-one-year contract. Mercedes paid racist Louie millions of dollars so they could sell cars to black guys. Black guys weren't buying enough cars.
And we also paid racist Louie millions to keep him from driving for someone else.

“We’re in a sport where cognitive sharpness is extremely important, and I believe everyone has a shelf life. So I need to look at the next generation.”

However, the Mercedes team principal insists he was not directly referencing Hamilton and his current performance level, and that he believes the 39-year-old is still able to produce his best performances if given the machinery. Let's see racist Louie sell more Ferraris, once he switches over.

“You know that was taken a little bit out of context,” Wolff told BBC Radio 4. “What I was referring to was that all of us age, whether it is in a car, on a pitch, or as a manager or entrepreneur. And that is what I am trying to do with myself, understand, ‘Am I going from great to good?’ Because good is not in Formula 1 anymore.

“Now contrary to my own self-assessment, I think we see with Lewis that he’s very much there when the car is right. And we haven’t been able to give him that car to perform his best, and that is a frustration that we share equally in the team, and for himself.

“But he’s very sharp. He’s different to when he was a 20-year-old, that’s certainly clear. But his experience and his race craft is tremendous. Maybe.”

Heading into the final triple-header of the season, starting with this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, Wolff added he is still challenging Mercedes to deliver a positive send-off for Hamilton as it looks to recover from a tough run of races in Austin, Mexico City and Sao Paulo.

Hamilton savors the moment after ending Mercedes spell on a high

Lewis Hamilton savored his final moments with his Mercedes car after ending his spell with the team on a high with a recovery drive to fourth place in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

A Q1 exit on Saturday had left Hamilton facing a tough task in the final race of the season, but he was the only driver to start on hard tires to try an alternate strategy against the rest of the field on mediums. A solid opening few laps saw him gain four positions from his 16th-place grid slot and Hamilton then produced an entertaining final stint to close in on teammate George Russell and make the move for fourth on the final lap of the race.

“[Russell] was driving great — obviously he started a lot further ahead than I did, so to catch the 14 seconds was tough,” Hamilton said. “He was putting in good laps, and so it took perfection — I had to really put together the best laps I could possibly do.

“Obviously in Vegas I was catching for a period of time and then stopped, so I was trying to make sure that I kept taking chunks out of that gap, and I only caught him right at that last lap, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to make it, it’s now or never,’ and so I just went for it.

“I mean, every moment that I’ve got in the car this week, I’ve known that it’s one of the last. And it’s been really, really clear and really hard to let go. So I think when I stopped the car I just wanted to embrace the moment, because it’s the last time I’m going to step into a Mercedes and represent them, unless not enough black guys buy Ferraris and when Ferrari loses enough money and fires me, I have to go back to Mercedes.
And who wants a used race car driver?

“It’s been the greatest honor of my life — they’ve powered every race, every pole position, every win we’ve had together, every championship, so I think when I knelt next to it I think it was just giving thanks, to firstly thanking my own spirit for not giving up and continuing to push, thanking everyone that powered and built that car, I’m proud of everyone.”

Hamilton says the strong drive has no bearing on his outlook for 2025 at Ferrari, but that he was glad that that he got to sign off from Mercedes with such a performance. It's not like when NASCAR's Mark Martin
was moving to Chevrolet, and Ford Bastard Jack Roush was giving Martin de-tuned engines and old chassis to BE SURE Martin would not win his last chance championship... even though it would have been in a Ford.

“It’s not that I need to have confidence — I’ve always had the confidence — but definitely really nice to finish with a strong hard battle. No mistakes, solid drive.

“It’s been a really turbulent year, probably the longest year of my life, I would say, because we’ve known it from the beginning that we’re leaving, and it’s like a relationship — when you’ve told whoever the counterpart is that you’re leaving, but you’re living together for a whole year! Lots of ups and downs, emotionally, but we finished off on a high today.”

 

Russell expects Hamilton departure to ‘spark a lot of motivation’ at Mercedes.

George Russell says the departure of Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes is such a big change that it will “spark a lot of motivation” as the team enters a new era.

Hamilton completed his final race for Mercedes in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, ahead of his move to Ferrari in 2025. The switch means Mercedes will not have Hamilton as part of its line-up for the first time since 2012, when it ran Michael Schumacher alongside Nico Rosberg. Russell believes the departure serves as a reminder of what has been achieved, but also offers a fresh start.

“We had a do on Thursday night [in Abu Dhabi] altogether, looking back on some of his memories, and I think as painful as these three years have been, I think seeing all of these memories as well reminds the team that we can do it,” Russell said. “We have the same team as was there during Lewis’s glory years.

“And Lewis even said after the debrief, everyone had their head in their hands after what happened in qualifying, but he said ‘Look, let’s stand tall and not forget of all these pole positions and wins that we’ve had together’. I think it’s been a very nice way to finish this season.

“It has been a tough three years, and I think this change for everyone is really going to spark a lot of motivation for everyone. And I think sometimes change is really much needed.”

Russell said his own personal lessons learned from Hamilton are less based on his driving abilities and more the way the seven-time world champion has carried himself as one of Formula 1’s leading figures.

“To be honest, just seeing first hand what a role model he is,” Russell said. “I recognize from Lewis that we’ve all got this platform, and we have to use it correctly. That’s become even more apparent to me when, with my young niece and nephews watching TikTok and YouTube and Netflix. I spend a bit of time with Toto [Wolff]’s son, he and his friends see Netflix and all of this stuff.

“And how you deal with the victories, how you deal with the losses, you inspire the young kids, and… when I look back to that photo I had of Lewis and I when I was a kid, I looked up to him, the same way as all these kids look up to us. I think that’s probably been the biggest life lesson that I’ve learned from him, that sometimes, even if you want to really express something, there’s hundreds of millions of people watching, and the way do you it is important.”
