Why there are fewer teams...a "union"to keep out competition so to speak......
Reduce the number of competitors....then F1 complains when the cost of racing goes up...as if they cared...Then F1 complains about fewer entries and claims they don't know why...so why do spectators continue to buy tickets to watch smaller fields?

Next question is: When teams drop out permanently, who gets the money now which a new team paid in? Or do the existing teams who made money off the new guy keep the money? Is that an easy question?

Does someone give money back if they profited when that new team came in?

If a team permanently drops out can a new team take his place without paying?

Michael Andretti is able to pay the $200 million anti-dilution fee to existing Formula 1 teams to confirm his own entry if required, according to his father Mario.

Andretti’s attempts to enter an F1 team of his own after failing to purchase Sauber were made public on Friday by the motorsport legend, who tweeted about the work that has been done with the FIA so far. The most recent Concorde Agreement saw the introduction of a $200m fee that would be split among all existing teams to compensate for the reduced share of revenues in future, and Andretti Sr. tells RACER that the project is ready to pay that.

“Yes, yes,” Andretti said when asked about the fee. “Like I say, we’re going into this thing with our eyes wide open and we know some of the prerequisites. I don’t think Michael is asking for any special favors, we need to comply with whatever we need to comply to and go on. It’s as simple and as complicated as that, but we know what we are getting into.”

Andretti’s team would see a new facility established in the United Kingdom to run the team and cars from, but wider Andretti Autosport developments would allow some car manufacturing to take place from Indianapolis, according to Mario.

“I don’t want that to be confused — we get some remarks even on Twitter, ‘Oh yeah, you can’t operate of the U.S.’ We’re not going to operate out of the U.S. Michael’s whole plan is to expand all operations, expand even the facility in Indianapolis where we’re going to have much more capability to be able to manufacture aspects of it, not relying on other vendors.

“But the base operation, engineering, everything is going to be out of the UK. That’s solid, that’s the way it’s going to be. We don’t need to confuse all that. A lot of people said ‘You’re a dreamer to operate out of the Us’ – no, that’s not the intent. We’re not stupid about these things.”

Here, Mario speaks exclusively to RACER about the plans and how they’re taking shape.

Q: It’s really big exciting news that has got a lot of people talking – how exciting is it to know of all the plans because you must be involved pretty heavily?

“That’s exactly right. What’s interesting, what’s kept me motivated in the business all my life is when I’m excited about something to share it with fans of the sport and then see their reaction. It’s been amazing. The feedback that we’ve received and I’ve received has been 99.9% positive and that’s what we live for in so many ways. That’s what’s so gratifying and that’s why you embark on a lot of these ventures that obviously are very ambitious — no question — but that’s what it’s all about. That’s what keeps you going. Wouldn't you a-hole reporters like to get some cash every time another reporter started writing/

“I’m very proud of what Michael is doing and his goals. I certainly endorse what he’s doing and I’m there to help whichever way I can without having a job! That’s the perfect scenario!

“I said, ‘You’re so far along and you’ve done so much work since the attempt to purchase a present team failed.’ He’s not giving up on the idea, period. He started working immediately on the Plan B, if you will, that now becomes Plan A, to just start his own team. He has a couple of individuals behind him that are here for the duration and are solid, and everyone is feeling the same way, feeling very positive about embarking on something like this.

“It is a huge situation here to get into but we live this sport. That’s all we do, that’s all we know and it’s not that we’re people who just have the financial means and say, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ No, this is our life. This is all we do. We breathe what we do.

“So we’re here for the duration and for Michael, you could see he’s been very ambitious as a team owner by participating in different disciplines all over the world if you think about it. Formula E, Extreme E, Supercars in Australia… He likes to put himself next to some good partners as well.

“But the Formula 1 goal here is the ultimate goal for him as well, no question about it, and he’s young enough to be there for a long, long time. And from my standpoint to see all of this happening is really what keeps me going, to be honest with you.”
A person can buy more expensive hookers than you a-hole reporters paying $2 a pop.

Q: It would be incredible to see it come off, especially such a positive reaction. There was already a positive one when he was trying to buy Sauber, so was the idea to create his own team a response to that or was he working on both plans at the same time?

“To be honest with you all along he had this idea of, ‘Well, if this doesn’t work we might have to start our own team.’ So he started working, he started talking about possible connections — that’s how he pretty much lined himself up with an engine supplier and some of the aspects where, if you don’t have anything like that at least promised then what’s the point? Also, he has some very, very interesting and powerful individuals ready to come onboard as soon as this thing becomes official, with how to guide him and how to be involved in a start-up operation.

“I cannot mention these individuals now until it’s official, but he’s done his homework to the point where I said, ‘You know, Michael, I’m going to say something about it,’ and he said, ‘OK, just don’t tell them everything!’ I just can’t sit back and not share some of this with the fans.”

Q: And you making it public must also help in terms of more potential partners or people who want to be involved in the project coming to you now that more people know about it?

“That’s my point exactly. We all know the importance of that — to arm yourself with the best talent possible for the particular job and that’s the secret of everything. That’s how you reach out — you try to create enough excitement that it could be interesting for a lot of talents to join something like this and be part of it. Some people want to be part of it because they need a job and they are building their resume. Some people want to be part of it, because they can exploit the Andretti name and can make money advertising whatever they sell.

“All of it works. I’ve already been reaching out to really key people — I have a lot of friends in the business and that’s the beauty of it. Motorsports is one big family; we’re all part of it and we’re the ones who are here to stay, that’s the important thing, because this is all we do.”

How far down the line are you with the FIA? Have you just registered interest that you want an entry or have you had to do anything specific so far?

“It’s in there, it’s absolutely with the key people. All of this has been going on and at the moment I think it’s a matter of them getting approval from the teams and all of that what has to happen. There’s several steps that they have to take which is part of it. I’ve been in touch with Bernie (Ecclestone, former F1 chairman) — he and I have been speaking and I’ve been getting a lot of guidance as well. He’s the one who implemented a lot of these rules and sometimes it helps to grease the skids as they say in the old country.

“We’re on it. We’re on it in all those aspects — we’re not going in here blindly. Anything that has been asked of us — guarantees and whatever — we comply. So if there’s anything more they need from us, we’re ready to respond. That’s the way it is, that’s where we are.”

You mentioned the fees — at the moment it’s $200 million to buy an entry into the sport. I know F1 mentioned that might be waived with agreement, but if it isn’t, is Michael in a position to pay?

“Yes, yes. Like I say, we’re going into this thing with our eyes wide open and we know some of the prerequisites. I don’t think Michael is asking for any special favors — we need to comply with whatever we need to comply to and go on. It’s as simple and as complicated as that, but we know what we are getting into.” If it was Amway and the people already in it got money when somebody new joined, it would be called a pyramid and then govt would leap in and kick somebodys a**...unless you bought them off of course. Here, we don't have to pay them off because it's what somebody would call a "legit scam" and everybody does it.
And who's going to complain? The people who are doing it? What are they going to complain about? They are involved!

It has been reported that the chassis could be made in Indianapolis but the team will run out of the UK, is that accurate?

“Yeah absolutely. “Yeah they are, but this would be a totally different scale. This would be a whole new-scale operation.”

In terms of drivers, Colton Herta was lined up if the Sauber takeover happened, is it still an ambition to take some of the young American talents that you guys help nurture across to F1?

“Absolutely. Michael is a great believer of that, cultivating talent. He’s done that in the Indy series, bringing them through Indy Lights and all of those farm programs. That’s another thing — you don’t want to put the cart before the horse but he says once we’re in there in the series, he says we’re going to field a Formula 2 and Formula 3 team. This is long, long, long-term planning. And how many Formula 1 teams do that? Not too many. But they will and that’s what Michael has done. How many teams in IndyCar are doing that? Not too many, but Michael is doing it. That’s his way of going about it, but he’s all-in in this sport. He has big plans for the future, for as long as he is able to participate in this sport. He’s young enough so I think it’s individuals like Michael who can provide stability in this sport, because like I say we don’t come and go. It’s all we do, it’s all we know.”

Q: Does the timing feel right because of the extra interest in F1 in the U.S. and the fact that maybe that will help get partners on board and get brands to work with you to make this a reality?

“That’s huge, exactly. That plays all the way around. I think it’s got to be adding some interest too as far as the fanbase with more races, two races now in the U.S. and to have another U.S. team in Formula 1…

“And then the important thing to also have — he’s going to definitely start with at least one American driver, which more than likely is going to be Colton. I’d put my money on that kid any day, I just feel that he’s something very special and it’s not just words, he’s proving it and it’s fun to watch him doing his things. Michael has been able to be part of that, cultivated him right from the beginning when he came out of Europe in Formula 4 when he drove alongside people like Lando Norris. People like that know him, so he has a great feel for these things.

“And look what he’s done so far in the IndyCar Series. Already won six races, pole positions against the best that IndyCar has got to offer, so don’t take that lightly. That’s pure talent, because everybody in IndyCar has the same equipment, basically, so the onus is a lot more on the driver. It would be lovely to see an American that really wants to be there and he’s one of them.

“Michael can provide that vehicle unless he gets an opportunity sooner, and Michael would let him go. But he’s one, and Michael will arm himself with at least one American driver, maybe two. But it’s going to be at least one, and that’s important. It’s been a long time since we had an American driver in F1.

“It all plays. With the Netflix (“Drive To Survive”) show that’s been floating around for a couple of years now, I think that has awakened a lot of the fanbase here but also cultivated some new fanbase — we’ve seen that. Look at the crowd they had at COTA for the weekend, that was really unbelievable. So that’s it, all of it is coming together I think. Formula 1 is in a good place and you want to be part of it.”

Q: I spoke to Colton after he won at Daytona and he mentioned there are still opportunities in F1 — now I know what he was on about!

“The kid is for real. I know what I’m talking about, I know when I see something. I said the same thing about Max (Verstappen) when I first saw him. I said the same thing about Sebastian Vettel when he won Monza with Toro Rosso and things like that — I’ve been around long enough to see these things and I haven’t been wrong yet!”

So 2024 is the target, can you speak about engine suppliers or partners yet?

“2024 is the target, yes. Partners is something that Michael will have to divulge when everything is official, so I think those are news that are part of his department, not mine, otherwise he would fire me I think. He knows I can’t keep too many secrets so he says, ‘OK go with it!’ He knows me better than that.” My boy's never going to get so big that I can't whip his butt.

 

Andretti team adds quantum computing partner

Andretti Autosport is adding more computing horsepower to its NTT IndyCar Series program.

Through a new multi-year agreement with Zapata Computing, the two companies have struck an arrangement where Andretti’s four-car Honda-powered team receives “brand sponsorship and a multi-million-dollar agreement to deploy and leverage Zapata’s platform, Orquestra, in search of race day success with advanced analytics and quantum techniques.” So what the heck does that mean? Somebody is putting up some money and nobody can tell you any reason why?

The agreement will also add a new presence to the IndyCar paddock in the form of the Zapata Performance Innovation and Technology (P.I.T.) Center tractor-trailer “where accelerated analytic capabilities are powered by Orquestra, bringing real-time performance edges to Andretti’s team at NTT IndyCar Series events. The Zapata P.I.T. Center is built to provide Andretti’s engineering team enhanced efficiencies over their current infrastructure and analytics solutions — beginning with advanced ML and optimization work, and increasingly using quantum techniques as the technology matures during the course of the partnership.” So what the heck does that mean? Somebody is putting up some money and nobody can tell you any reason why?

Michael Andretti added, “We’re excited to be working with a true leader in quantum computing through our partnership with Zapata. IndyCar racing is all about finding every possible edge and then maximizing it. Zapata’s expertise gives us that advantage through their Orquestra quantum software platform and expert scientists and engineers. The partnership is going to propel both organizations to great things this year and beyond.”

The prospect of Michael Andretti trying to enter a Formula 1 team in 2024 has drawn mixed reactions from current F1 team principals.

Mario Andretti recently made public Michael’s attempts to gain a new entry into F1, stating that the team is able to pay the $200 million anti-dilution fee if required and is lodging paperwork with the FIA. Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi said earlier this week that he’d welcome a new entry that could become a technical partner in future, a number of his counterparts from other teams are yet to be convinced.

“I think it’s great that there’s the interest for people wanting to enter Formula 1,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said. “And the Andretti name is certainly a powerful name in motorsport, and of course they’re not the only ones that are making noises about coming on, but there is a clear criteria through the Concorde Agreement that has to be met and approved.

“I’m sure they’re engaged in that process. And of course that agreement is there to protect the 10 incumbents and not to dilute that, so obviously that would need to be carefully looked at.”

His Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff agreed, stating the need for a potential team to prove it can be competitive immediately to protect the level of competition.

“Andretti’s a name, that’s for sure,” Wolff said. “And the American market is important, but every team joining needs to be accretive – that means needs to add value. And it’s not only by paying a $200m entry fee but it needs to demonstrate, in my opinion, what it can do for all the other teams, F1 and the FIA. Only then the sport will grow.

“We are the absolute pinnacle, this is the Champions League, or the NFL, and redistributing franchises on the go that’s not how it should be and it’s not the intention of Formula 1 and the FIA either. But if there is a real brand coming in with good people, necessary funding – not only the $200m, but probably you need more around a billion if you want to play in this club straight from the get go – then why not?”

AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost was also on the fence, saying the existing teams need to accept Andretti, not just F1 and the FIA.

“We are 10 teams, and I think 10 really good teams,” Tost said. “At the end this is a decision from the FIA and from FOM. If Michael wants to come with a new team and if all the ingredients are coming together, and if all the teams also accept it then yes, otherwise no.”

However, there was clear support from McLaren, as Andreas Seidl feels more teams would actually help the value of the existing entrants.

“From our side we definitely would welcome the Andretti team, because the Andretti name, a U.S. team would help to grow the sport further in the U.S.,” Seidl said. “I think it would also simply open up more possibilities again to get young drivers in, the more teams we have.

“And in the end the earlier we get to 12 teams, for example – which is the maximum we can have – I think would just help to drive the franchise value even higher for us teams. So, absolutely open for it, would love to compete with them.”

Rossi reiterated his stance from Monday night, adding he likes the idea of added competition for the current grid.

“I welcome it, if it’s accretive,” Rossi said. “I think Andretti could have that potential because there is the U.S. aspect of it. We’ll see. I think it would be nice to spice things up on the track as well, which is good. It’s better to move the hierarchy a little bit over time a bit, I guess.”

 

Andretti says opinions are changing about his potential F1 entry.

Maybe someone by now with a high school diploma has figured out that 200 million dollars divided among 20 teams is 10 million each. That's a lot of steak dinners and cheap hookers.

The Formula 1 team owners and team principals who opposed Michael Andretti’s desired launch of the Andretti Global Formula 1 team in 2024 have started to change their tune, according to the former F1 and IndyCar driver.

“The good thing is we’ve talked now to a lot of the team owners, and we’re getting support from all the team owners now after they heard our story, so that’s a positive,” Andretti (pictured at left, above, with father Mario Andretti and McLaren’s Zak Brown) told RACER. “They’ve got to know how serious we are. I mean, we’ve been all over them, and I think there’s only going to be good fallout from Colton testing [with McLaren], and how serious this is for all of us.”

Andretti remains confident that his team, with deeply American roots, would strike a meaningful chord for F1 on a domestic front as grand prix racing continues to grow in popularity within the USA.

“We’re going to help the value of Formula 1 and not take away from it, in terms of the value that we’d bring to the bottom line will basically cover what we would be taking out of our side of the prize money,” he said.

“I think Liberty Media does like $3 billion a year, and if us coming into the series can’t be worth at least $100 million commercially in the scheme of things, you would think that it just makes sense for everybody.”

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown insists the team will not be sold to Audi despite discussions about a partnership with the auto manufacturer.

Audi has been linked with a takeover of McLaren as it evaluates its entry into Formula 1, with Volkswagen having given both Audi and Porsche the green light to join the sport in 2026. While admitting talks took place, Brown says the idea of selling the team was not one that McLaren was open to.

“Our shareholders are very committed to McLaren,” Brown said. “We did have conversations with Audi and we’re not for sale. We’re very committed to the future. We’re doing really well on the track, shareholders made substantial investments to give our team the resources we need to get back to the front, commercially we’re doing really well; morale in the team is really good. We don’t have any interest in selling the racing team.

“We won’t consider a buyout. It’s up to Andreas (Seidl — McLaren team principal) to decide what power unit he wants in the back of the racing car, but any conversation around buying McLaren is a non-starter.”

With the likes of Audi and Porsche only linked with existing teams rather than becoming standalone new constructors, Brown says any new teams need to show how they will increase the value of those already on the grid.

“I think we’ve got a great spectacle as it is. I understand that some people would go, ‘Well if there’s ten very healthy teams without a risk of losing a team…’ Whereas, historically, in the last 20 years there’s always been a team on the brink. I know Audi and Porsche — the (VW) CEO made a statement earlier this week which effectively confirmed that they’re coming into the sport.

“We can go up to 12 teams, and as long as it’s quality teams that are properly resourced and contribute to the growth of the sport, whether you buy an existing team, invest into an existing team or start one, I think it shows how healthy the sport is now that you have real people — investors and OEMs — that are trying to figure out a way to get into the sport. That’s achieved what we’ve always wanted to achieve which is to build franchise value for the racing teams which we can sell later to some other sucker.”

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says Andretti is merely the most vocal among a group of several aspiring new teams, and that he doesn’t think the sport needs to expand to increase its value.

Andretti Global’s attempt to enter F1 as a new team has been well-documented after it failed to acquire Sauber last year, but so far those efforts have been met with resistance from F1 and several existing teams. Recently, Toto Wolff’s stance that manufacturers like Audi and Porsche would be welcome but Andretti wouldn’t increase the sport’s value led to Mario Andretti questioning the Mercedes team principal’s influence, but Domenicali says it’s stronger teams that will improve F1 and that many others have also been trying to enter, albeit in a less public manner.

“In the actual status of Formula 1, it’s not a problem of quantity where we can see a step of increasing the value of Formula 1,” Domenicali said. “It’s a matter of understanding not only the ones who have a louder voice but there will be other people, because Andretti was quite vocal about his request, but there are others that have done the same in a different way.

“So the evaluation is not only with Andretti, but the evaluation is with others that are respecting the silence and trying to be more productive on proving who they are and respecting the protocol we have put in place. I do believe, as I always said, that today it’s not the problem of having more teams that will give value to the championship, but there is a protocol that has to be fulfilled and everyone – Andretti included – is following that. So this is the situation today.

“I don’t see any changes, and I don’t want to say yes or no, I just want to highlight one thing. Today we are talking about the regulations in 2026, and all the manufacturers that are involved in that – the incumbents and maybe the new ones, we will see – are saying that the time is running (out) very quickly, to have four years to do another power unit.

“We need to be prudent because when we are talking about Formula 1, we need to have an entity or a team or a manufacturer that is really solid, is really strong, and has a full commitment for an incredible long-term future. So that’s all I can really add on what is the status (of new teams), but as I said, today I don’t see honestly the need of that increase to have a big value for the sport of Formula 1.”

According to Domenicali, Andretti’s best hope is to partner with an existing team, as the added interest in F1 is likely to reduce the likelihood of a manufacturer leaving and therefore reduce the reliance on independent outfits.

“I think that today (manufacturers pulling out) is not a problem, it’s the other way round,” he said. “We have the same situation as the grands prix, there are more people that want to enter by far than people that want to leave. This is a good point, but can also be seen from the team perspective. If you are not strong… Formula 1 today requires an incredible level of professionalism and investments, not just for one year but long-term.

“Therefore… because there is the interest of a lot of manufacturers but also a lot of teams, the actual (existing) ones can discuss and commercialize and negotiate with them if they feel they are weak, or if they feel there is no future for them. So I think it’s also another value for the ones that are here knowing that around them there are other manufacturers or teams that want to be in the business. So it’s a fact that will – in my opinion of course – reinforce the value of Formula 1.”

 

So are people going to buy tickets because they will believe anything told to them by a con man or two?
