The Rolex 24 At Daytona came down to the two-car shootout between veteran car owners Wayne Taylor and Chip Ganassi.

Filipe Albuquerque in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura found himself trying to hold off the faster No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R driven by Renger van der Zande as the minutes wound down in the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season opener.

Van der Zande made two bids to get around the Acura, and was poised for a thrilling finish. Suddenly, with seven and a half minutes remaining, the Cadillac limped to the pits with a cut right-rear tire, and Albuquerque was home free.

The Acura driver took the checkered flag 4.704s ahead of Kamui Kobayashi in the No. 48 Ally Cadillac. Harry Tincknell rounded out the podium in the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P.

It was the third consecutive overall victory for Wayne Taylor Racing. The team won the past two years in a Cadillac, with a driver line-up including both van der Zande and Kobayashi.

For 2021, the team switched to Acura, with Taylor signing the reigning IMSA champs, Helio Castroneves and son Ricky Taylor, plus Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi and 2018 Rolex 24 winner Albuquerque.

“I think it was a hell of a show,” Albuquerque said. “I could almost see [Renger’s] eyes in my mirrors, he was so hungry for this. He was faster than me, but it’s one thing to catch and another thing is to pass. He was really pushing hard. I was lucky that they had a puncture. This was probably the hardest race of my life.”

Ricky Taylor led down the stretch before making the decision to turn the car over to his teammate for the final two stints.

“He is a superstar,” Taylor said. “We always knew he was the one we wanted in our Acura, along with Alex and Helio. He had all the pressure on the world on him, and he took it like a champion.”

The elder Taylor joined Ganassi (2006-0 and Peter Gregg (1973, 1975-76) as the lone team owners to win the event three consecutive times.

“That’s six wins in this race, and that’s [expletive] awesome,” Wayne Taylor said on his live NBC interview.

Joining Kobayashi in the second-place Action Express Ally Cadillac were Simon Pagenaud, Mike Rockenfeller and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.

“We laid it all out there on the table,” said Johnson, who finished second in a Daytona Prototype in his Rolex 24 debut in 2005. “We just got outperformed by the No. 10 car. At the end, we were settling in for fourth, and then to get second was special. It was a lot of fun, and we were hoping to get more, but we’ll be back here sometime in the future and give it another shot.”

The No. 55 Mazda RT24-P had trouble getting out of the pits for the start before Oliver Jarvis was able to get going for the green flag. While the car was able to get up to third for three laps, it seem to run the race at the tail end of the DPi contenders. But near the end, the Mazda came to life. Back on the lead lap, the Mazda co-driven by Harry Tincknell and Jonathan Bomarito challenged for the lead several time during the final two hours.

Juan Pablo Montoya, Dane Cameron, Olivier Pla and A.J. Allmendinger finished fourth in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura, followed by the Ganassi Cadillac of van der Zande, Scott Dixon and Kevin Magnussen. The five lead-lap finishers was a Rolex 24 event record.

The Ganassi Cadillac was the car to beat throughout the race. However, a penalty during a pit stop in the closing hours for wheelspin on the jacks dropped them 30 seconds back; it put the team in comeback mode for the remainder of the event.

The No. 5 JDC-Miller Motorsports Mustang Sampling Cadillac of Loic Duval, Sebastien Bourdais and Tristan Vautier was the Ganassi team’s biggest threat for the first half of the race. An unfortunate tangle with the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche sent that car to the garage and out of contention.

Another potential winner to experience trouble was the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac. Pole winner Felipe Nasr led the opening 20 laps and was running third when he suddenly lost fourth gear entering the banking in Turn 6 during the 19th hour. He sat in the garage for 21 laps, taking NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, Pipo Derani and Mike Conway out of contention. With the car many laps down, Elliott turned many hours during the closing stages to gain sports car experience.

Corvette Racing became the final GTLM class winner of the Rolex 24, with the two team cars running 1-2 for most of the race. Jordan Taylor took the checkered flag by 3.519s over Tommy Milner. Joining Taylor in the yellow No. 3 Corvette C8.R were Nicky Catsburg and Antonio Garcia, although the latter was forced to sit out the closing hours after testing positive for COVID-19 (click here for story) while Nick Tandy and Alexander Sims shared the silver No. 4 Corvette.

Alessandro Pier Guidi led entering the final hour in the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE. Taylor took the lead when the Ferrari pitted with 21 minutes remaining.

BMW’s two-year winning streak in the event ended. August Farfus, John Edwards, Jesse Krohn and Marco Wittman placed third in the No. 24 Team RLL M8 GTE, followed by the Ferrari of Pier Guidi, Davide Rigon, Jules Gounon and James Calado. Connor De Phillippi, Philipp End, Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler took fifth in the No. 25 BMW.

Misfortune strikes at least one team vying for the overall Rolex 24 At Daytona win each year, and in 2021, the unfortunate honor went to Cadillac Chip Ganassi Racing.

Having chased down eventual winner Felipe Albuquerque in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura ARX-05 DPi, Renger van der Zande had erased a big deficit in the final sprint to the checkered flag, but a blown right-rear tire, after 23 hours and 52 minutes of action, nullified the Dutchman’s chance of fighting with the Portuguese ace.

After leading 225 of the race’s 807 laps, and coming within a few car lengths of the Acura, CCGR’s No. 01 Cadillac DPi-V.R squad were left to finish fifth. Once as close as 0.20s to Albuquerque, van der Zande crossed the finish line 67 seconds behind.

“Definitely an interesting day,” said teammate Scott Dixon. “We had some great speed and then had a few problems with the car. We had some penalties to get through and some right rear blowouts as well. Obviously, that is what took us out of contention at the end. What a tremendous effort from the team considering this all came together in a very short time. At some point we had the race won, but unfortunately it just wasn’t our day, just proud of everyone.”

New CCGR driver Kevin Magnussen shared in Dixon’s assessment.

“Absolutely gutted,” he said after his first endurance race. “Looked like we had the race win right there. Renger had really good pace catching the No. 10 car – I think he would have had a really good chance to win the race. A really awesome experience for me, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I learned a lot and I can’t wait for a great season with Chip Ganassi Racing.”

It took 11 years, but Ryan Dalziel made scored his second career victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Dalziel, now based in nearby Orlando, joined Kyle Tilley, Paul-Loup Chatlin and Dwight Merriman in taking LMP2 honors sharing the No. 18 Era Motorsport Bremont/Idec Sport/Motul ORECA LMP2 07-Gibson.

Back in 2010, Dalziel was part of the winning overall lineup in the debut of Action Express Racing, driving a Porsche Riley with Joao Barbosa, Terry Borcheller and Mike Rockenfeller.

“I won one young and now won one old,” Dalziel said. “It feels like so long ago.”

Dalziel has been coming to the Rolex 24 since 2006, running the race for the 16th consecutive time this weekend.

“I’ve had so many years that were runners-up or thirds, or leading with a few hours to go, so this one was very special,” he said.

Dalziel joined Era at the end of last year. Era Motorsports made its debut in last year’s Rolex 24, finishing on the podium by placing third in LMP2 with Tilley joined by Merriman, Ryan Lewis and Nicolas Minassian. That was one position ahead of Dalziel, who co-drove with Tower Motorsport by Starworks.

“I had watched what they had done in their rookie season last year, and was real impressed with what Kyle [Tilley] had put together,” he said.

On Sunday, the race came down to Era Motorsports vs. Tower Motorsport in the final hour, with Dalziel’s new team coming out ahead of the car prepared by his long-time former car owner, Peter Baron.
Dalziel found early Rolex 24 success as part of Action Express’s winning line-up in 2010. Motorsport Images

“I had a really good feeling about this week,” Dalziel said. “My wife said she hadn’t seen me this confident coming into this event for a number of years. There’s something very special about this group. I went to their shop in early January, and I just knew it was going to be a good weekend. We definitely executed everything on our end. We had a couple of unlucky breaks that put us four laps down at one point, and we only got one yellow to get us on the lead lap. To be honest, it was executed as a team and the drivers. The car was extremely fast. We fought all the way back to the last 10 minutes. We knew we had to do a splash.

“I was crying my eyes out on pit road, and I’ll probably cry again when I get home.”

Team owner Tilley said the team was formed for last year’s Rolex 24.

“We were pretty confident coming into the weekend,” Tilley said. “To come here twice, initially with a podium and then to win the thing is pretty staggering. I can’t say enough for all the work put in by the team. I can just show up and drive.”

Askew thrilled after acing IMSA debut

Oliver Askew has the best problems to resolve after receiving a Rolex watch as part of Riley Motorsports’ LMP3 class-winning Rolex 24 At Daytona team.

Victorious on his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut in the No. 74 Ligier JS P320 he shared with fellow IndyCar man Spencer Pigot, Scott Andrews, and Gar Robinson, Askew drove away from the circuit with two items on his mind.

Sleepless since Saturday, Askew told RACER, “I’m tired, but the adrenaline is still pumping.” On top of needing to get some rest, there’s a shiny new timepiece hanging from his wrist that requires a bit of work. “I think I need to get it resized, but that’s easy,” the Floridian said. And more than anything, the former Arrow McLaren SP NTT IndyCar Series driver needs to complete two more hours of driving before his weekend is complete.

Pointed south for Sebring, Andretti Autosport’s 2019 Indy Lights champion is on standby to test for the team’s IndyCar outfit on Monday if new full-time driver James Hinchcliffe is unable to make the trek. Celebrating the big Rolex 24 win will have to wait as the 24-year-old maintains his professional focus for the likelihood of a one-off test, but with time to kill, Askew described a whirlwind event that ended in Victory Lane.

“First of all, it was a pleasure to compete with Bill Riley and his team,” he said. “I mean, when you think of the Daytona 24, Bill has a huge history at that race, and he’s just an absolute legend. So it was cool to work around him and his staff. I was asked to do multiple things in the race like run down the leader, got our lap back, passed cars under green and pushed when I needed to. And then I was also asked to just take care of the equipment and maintain position.

“So it was a mix of everything. I got the full experience, for sure. It was really cool to run a multi-class racing for the first time. That was quite interesting. I definitely felt like I got a proper hold of that a couple of stints into it, understanding where do you pass without losing so much time and just timing those passes, overtaking the GTD cars, which was the only class that we were quicker than.”

Askew also got to know the driving talents of Andres and Robinson for the first time, and came away with great appreciation for their contributions to the result.

“Gar Robinson did a fantastic job the first couple of stints; he actually quadruple-stinted,” he said. “Bill kept asking him, ‘Hey, are you okay to stay in for another stint? You okay for another stint? And he just kept going and going, and ended up going from last, P7, to P1, which was awesome. He then handed the car off to my teammates, and Spencer, Scott Andrews, everyone gave so much and took care of business.”

Askew makes no secret of his desire to make an IndyCar return, but he also says finding a full-season opportunity in IMSA would not be a second-tier option.

“Definitely, I was a sports car racing fan before I was an IndyCar fan,” he said. “It was a tradition for my friend and I had to go to the 12 Hours of Sebring. We used to camp out there overnight and just soak in the whole experience of multi-class GT racing, prototype racing. I remember being in awe of the Audi R18s, and loved the racing. And I always have. To now put my helmet on in this paddock is really cool. So hopefully I can … Well, now I can call myself a sports car driver, right? I couldn’t say that before.”
