Bill Elliott joins SRX series field

Superstar Racing Experience, the new IROC-style series for racing legends set to launch in the summer of 2021, has announced the addition of Bill Elliott to the SRX driver line-up.

Over the course of his NASCAR career, Elliott won the Daytona 500 twice in addition to winning the 1988 NASCAR Cup Series championship. Elliott, who was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015 is widely considered one of the most popular drivers in the history of NASCAR.

“I am excited to reunite with (series co-founder) Ray Evernham and some of the great legends of our sport. I look forward to racing at some of the most historic American racing destinations and putting on an awesome show for the fans,” said Elliott. “We have a special driver field and it will be fun competing with some of the greatest drivers of all time.”

Elliott joins series co-founder Tony Stewart, Tony Kanaan, Paul Tracy, Bobby Labonte, Willy T. Ribbs, Mark Webber and Helio Castroneves on the list of confirmed drivers for the inugural series that will air Saturday nights in prime time on CBS in the summer of 2021.

SRX reveals first images of car

Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) has taken the wraps off the car that will race the inaugural season of the six-round short-track series.

The Ray Evernham-designed car is powered by Ilmor’s 396 engine, an LS-based V8 originally designed for ARCA stock cars. In SRX trim, it will deliver 700 horsepower with 530 ft-lb of torque.


Drawing inspiration from the now-defunct IROC events, SRX will feature sprint races with drivers from an array of racing backgrounds competing in identically-prepared cars. In addition to series co-founder Tony Stewart, the line-up currently includes Tony Kanaan, Paul Tracy, Bobby Labonte, Willy T. Ribbs, Bill Elliott, Ernie Francis Jr., Marco Andretti, Helio Castroneves and Michael Waltrip.



SRX debuts June 12 at Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut. After that, it visits back-to-back dirt tracks — Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway on June 19 and Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, on June 26. The series returns to pavement July 3 at Lucas Oil Raceway near Indianapolis, and then ventures north to Slinger (Wis.) Speedway on July 10. SRX’s inaugural season culminates July 17 at the iconic Nashville (Tenn.) Fairgrounds Speedway.

SRX Racing has announced that Bill Elliott will return to the series for two races during the 2022 season for all the all-oval series. The NASCAR legend will join the competition at Five Flags Speedway on June 18 and Stafford Motor Speedway on July 2.

“I can’t wait to climb back into my SRX car and compete against the class of guys in this series!” said Elliott.

During the 2021 SRX season, Elliott was one of eight drivers who competed for the coveted inaugural SRX Racing Series championship. Elliott’s most successful weekend during the 2021 season came at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tenn. Elliott started the day winning the first heat followed by a sixth-place finish in heat two. Battling with his son Chase, Elliott was able to earn his best finish in a feature event with a third-place finish with Chase taking the win in Nashville.

“Assembling this field of Superstar drivers has been a blast,” said SRX CEO Don Hawk. “Having the opportunity to announce the driver who is a series champion, Daytona 500 champion, Indy Brickyard 400 winner, three-time Southern 500 winner and 16-time Most Popular Driver, Bill Elliott, is really special to me.”

“Bill raced with the best and I remember meeting with him in 1986 and trying to do a business deal with he and the Mellings,” continued Hawk. “Now, here it is 36 years later and we’ve got the deal done. I couldn’t be happier.”

The 2022 SRX Racing 2022 season kicks off at Five Flags Speedway on June 18 in Pensacola, Fla.

NTT IndyCar Series championship leader Josef Newgarden has kept his calendar exceptionally clear throughout his open-wheel career, but that’s going to change in July when he steps outside his comfort zone in a one-off appearance in the SRX series.

Set for July 9 on the short paved oval at the Nashville Fairgrounds in his home state of Tennessee, Newgarden will take part in the SRX race between IndyCar visits to Mid-Ohio the week prior and a trip north to Toronto the following weekend. Team Penske’s two-time IndyCar champions has tried to take part in IMSA’s Rolex 24 At Daytona and other endurance races, all with no luck, but thanks to an invite from SRX founder Ray Evernham, Newgarden will finally get to try something completely different from his No. 2 Chevy Indy car.

“I did tell Ray last year when I went to the Nashville SRX race that I’d love to run one of these races, and so they’ve made it possible for me at my home event,” Newgarden told RACER. “I’ve not had many opportunities to try other stuff. I don’t even know that I’ll be able to drive this car before that weekend. So I probably won’t be very well prepared, but I’m happy to do it!”

Newgarden will be pitted against other stars of motor racing on the half-mile paved oval in the converted Trans Am cars powered by big, naturally-aspirated V8 engines.

“I’ve never really driven a stock car either and this is kind of a pseudo stock car, more like a road race car turned into a stock car,” he said. “I don’t know if I like short ovals in a Trans Am-type car, but I’m gonna find out.”

Newgarden hopes the Nashville SRX outing becomes the first of many extracurricular outings in the sport.

“I’ve wanted to do other things outside IndyCar and just haven’t had the opportunity,” he said. “And maybe this is the first of multiple things that might come in the future. I would hope so. I really want to branch out and get some extra experience.”
